Finding Monte Blanc House on the internet was a sheer stroke of luck! After reading lots of mixed reviews about hotels in The French Quarter we arrived at Monte Blanc House with some trepidation. We need not have worried as we were welcomed with open arms by James Garner, the owner. What a little gem! Tucked away in the Faubourg Marigny, next to it's more well known neighbour, this pretty little district is a well kept secret, used by many locals, including Nicholas Cage, who has receently bought a house here. Our suite was, to say the least impressive, with much thought going into the decor and comfort of the guests.Sumptuous French Decadence would be the theme! We were given the freedom of the house to use as our own, and that included the well stacked fridge and it's contents!! Being within easy walking distance of the action, but away from the noise made this the perfect spot. James was full of information about places to eat that are tucked away from the tired touristy places, we met the real New Orleans people not the plastic front that is creeping into The French Quarter. Perhaps it is becoming a victim of it's own sucess. Of course you must walk down Bourbon street, go to Acme Oyster Bar, Mother's etc. but take some time to wander down some of the little known streets to get a real feel of the place. Take a cab over to Feelings Cafe on Franklin for a fabulous meal and a warm sincere welcome, or Adolpho's on Frenchman Street. Snug Harbour a few doors along has great music. Seek out Lulu's in Exchange Alley for lunch, soup and salad to die for! Drop into Tujague's on Decatur St. have a drink at the bar and share THE sandwich with a freind. You won't have too hard a choice - there is only ONE! but what a one. Choosing tours seems mind boggling but you cannot go wrong with Cajun Encounters for an intimate experience of Honey Island Swamp.The Natchez trip was great, however, lunch was very missable! Laura plantation and the Monde Creole tour must not be missed, but if you can, try to get there e you have had time to savour the atmosphere. Two weeks here was not long enough, as James lavished us with the Southern Hospitality that we thought was long gone with Rhett Butler. Leaving New Orleans was like leaving behind part of us, we will be back!!
