My wife and I just returned from our annual Mardi Gras trip to New Orleans (we both ride in parades). I've visited New Orleans dozens and dozens of times over the past several years, so I know my way around the city pretty well. This past trip was at least our tenth stay at O'Malley House, and the experience just seems to get better every time.

This is an elegant home that's in no way stuffy (not always an easy combination to pull off). The rooms are spacious, comfortable and clean, and the artwork displayed throughout the house is delightful. But that's all physical stuff. What makes this bed and breakfast stand out from all the rest, more than anything else, is its owner, Larry.

Larry is super-friendly, and he seems like a friend from the moment you meet him. His knowledge of the city, its customs, restaurants and attractions is invaluable -- even for a NOLAphile like me. And when he starts telling stories over breakfast, he often has the whole table howling with laughter. In addition to Larry, the staff consists of Brent (whose delicious breakfasts are served up with a side of humor), and an adorable pair of Golden Retrievers named Porter and Jackson.

Our stays usually last anywhere from 4-6 nights, and there are so many good restaurants within a couple blocks' radius of the Mid City location, we often don't have time to visit all of our favorites -- and that doesn't even include the hundreds of other amazing restaurants scattered throughout the city.

Getting to downtown/the French Quarter is easy via the Canal Streetcar line, which you can board just a half block from O'Malley House's front door. The location a couple miles AWAY from all the hustle, bustle and noise of the French Quarter is absolutely perfect if you like a respite from the craziness when it's time to catch a little sleep.

I guess the only negative, for me, is the sad feeling I get when our vacation ends, and it's time to pack up and leave -- until next time. And as far as my wife and I are concerned, there will ALWAYS be a next time at O'Malley House for my wife and me.

My wife, my mom, my sister and I stayed at the O'Malley House for 3 nights at the front end of Mardi Gras festivities before we took a cruise from New Orleans to the Bahamas. The house is wonderful, historic, and appointed in a way to take you back in time. It is located in midtown, just north of the French Quarter. Larry, the owner, and Brent his right hand man take care of everything: Larry took our bags to our 3rd floor rooms, the only two guest rooms on that floor. The other guest rooms (six additional I believe) are located on the second floor. Brent cooked exceptional breakfasts each morning, and arranged tours and taxis for us. Larry let us store our larger "cruise" luggage pieces in his downstairs office, which was very nice, as we did not need them while visiting. Both Larry and Brent took time to sit down and visit with us in the mornings and evenings, helping us understand the area, make decisions about what and where to eat, and the best ways to get around. The B&B is located just off Canal Street, but is an easy walk to the Canal Street streetcar service, which is a very economical way to get to the cemeteries (about 10 mins) the French Quarter (15-20 mins) or to transfer to the to the St Charles Streetcar (about 20 mins). The rooms were quiet, we did not hear a peep, even though the house was full. We are already planning our return to 1896 O'Malley House...our only regret is that we did not stay longer!

Room tip: The rooms on the third floor are a little simpler and more spartan than the second floor rooms and are priced accordingly. However, they are very quiet, and spacious. Of the two rooms on this floor, the McNeil Suite has its bathroom inside the room, while the Cooney Suite has its (private) bathroom located just outside its door.

Larry and Brent were the best!!! The B and B was clean, quiet, and the food was excellent. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The location was close to the street car, which made it easy to get to many locations in the city. I can't wait to visit again.

Great B and B with beautiful rooms and delicious breakfasts every morning. Larry and Brent were outstanding hosts who are full of great tips to enjoy the city. The location is closed to the French quarter , City Park and a host of other tour destinations. I will definitely be staying at the O'Malley House again

This was our second time in New Orleans but our first stay at the O'Malley house, and we will be back! Loved the enormous bathroom in room #1, the bed was divine, and we woke to the smells of a delicious, gourmet breakfast every morning. Brent and Larry are not only friendly and gracious, but have a wealth of knowledge of the area. We loved every single recommendation they made! The house is short cab fare or quick ride on the street car from all the action of the French Quarter. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in New Orleans!
