We had been planning a 5 night mountain cabin stay and choose the " Honey Bear" cabin, which is a pet friendly cabin. A portion of the cabin, the bedroom, which had a nice Temperpedic King sized bed ( which we never stayed in), had something in the cabin to which I had an allergic asthmatic reaction. After moving all of our items/ stuff into the cabin..which was a late arrival ( after 9 p.m.),my husband and I had to vacate..as whatever air freshener they used I was allergic to. For people with asthma and other lung issues, be advised that most any cabin can also have a musty scent. I did'nt anticipate any problems and we had truly been looking forward to this first of October time frame for a vacation. We re packed our items into the trunk of the car and vacated the cabin and ended up driving into Asheville, NC to stay in a hotel there.
On a positive note, the following day my husband called Ed. In the process of bringing in our stuff, hubby did twist his knee..as there are rocks embedded in concrete on an uneven surface..and he slipped or rather tripped and hurt himself while on this uneven , unpaved surface which leads to the cabin. The rental company ( Ed and his wife) DID give us a refund, however, when they learned that we had to vacate due to my health issues/ asthma and allergy attack.
Both of us enjoy being in the mountains and we had never been to any of the mountain cabins in any area.
The cabin was clean, though the scent of the air freshners did bother me, it did not bother my husband. He did not twist his knee until we were leaving and trying to bring the suitcases back to the car.
When we arrived, our packet was where it was supposed to be. The cabin was, as far as esthetics, nicely decorated and quiet and somewhat remote. As far as cell phone access, which we had not even thought about, we had no access via at and t in this location.
There was a wi fi hot spot at a nearby Italian restaurant..which had very good food and good service/ nice staff at the restaurant. Also, there is a grocery store not far from the cabins.
Overall, I am very thankful that the couple was gracious enough to refund our money..since they do have to hire people to clean and maintain all of these individually owned properties.
Bear in mind that each of the cabins or chalets may or may not have internet access or cell phone access. For some people, this is important. Perhaps in the future, something will change..and maybe each cabin/ chalet possibly could have wi fi etc.,but our " Sugar Bear" cabin did not.
Our original travel date was last August. We ended up having to change dates and even cabins.
Also, in early October the leaves have not yet changed...and that was one of the main reasons we booked the cabin in October.
Here are my suggestions...which may end up costing something. I would recommend to Ed etc. that in the pet friendly cabins..to omit carpeting. This also possibly could cut down on having to utelize air fresheners that contain certain chemicals that some are allergic to.
In order to eliminate any musty odors or things like that, some can't be avoided..after all, these are mountain cabins, chalets that are set on the side of a mountain.
For those of us who have asthma, and are sensitive to scents etc., perhaps a cabin or a chalet may not be the prime choice for a vacation.
I think the price was fair and good. My husband was treated with respect when he asked for a refund of our investment for the 5 night stay.
For those who want to " get away from it all"...not be bothered with cell phone calls etc. and really want a retreat in a beautiful mountain side..I actually WOULD recommend the people who run " Stony Brook Cabins and Chalets".
Also, in an earlier review...any time anyone uses any " hot tub" at any public place...you do so at your own risk. I think it is over the top to expect the property brokers to pay for any medical bills ensued by using the hot tub.
In using any property other than your own home..and yes, sometimes even your own hot tub or whirlpool can lead to e coli and other easily obtained bladder and other infections. This is NOT all that uncommon. So, in this case, I must defend the property management company. Use any public facility ...be it hotel, motel, cabin, chalet...and be as informed of your rights as consumers as you possibly can be prior to making an investment of your time, energy, money etc.
As I said, I would recommend these property owners. I do hope that they can do something to obtain access for those who need and want to use their wireless devices in the mountains.
I would like to have met the managment couple, but we arrived late..and could not.
Yes, there is a cleaning fee. I would imagine that most people do not clean their cabin or chalet..and this is a huge responsiblity to manage this many cabins/ chalets. I know that I would not want this big of a responsiblity.
I am sorry that we had to leave...as I had truly looked forward to this vacation. Even with the asthma/ allergy issues..for those who do not have asthma/ allergies..this cabin is nicely sized, clean, and had a nice homey feel.
I think Thanksgiving and Christmas would be an ideal time to book. If Ed or Pam are reading this review..thank you for giving us a refund. We greatly appreciate what you did for us !
