“Lovely stay, incredible surroundings!”

We had the privilege of staying at Homestead as part of our Glacier Bay experience. Sally was amazing in arranging the charter flights in from Juneau, the kayaking and Glacier Bay cruise. Her help relieved a lot of stress in planning the holiday. The B&B is wonderful and Sally's breakfasts are probably the healthiest we have eaten in ages! Everything comes from the surroundings or her own garden patch. We really got an amazing lesson in living life away from many of the usual amenities. The day cruise up into Glacier Bay was one of my top life experiences to date!

“Sally makes you feel like you are home”

Sally greeted us. After settling in, we got on bicycles like we had not ridden in decades. The bikes had high handle bars and coaster brakes, but were in good working condition and quite adequate for the mostly flat terrain. We had the opportunity to explore the area.

The next morning Sally served scrambled eggs using combination of fresh duck and chicken eggs. The duck eggs gave the eggs a bright yellow color. Also served were a special juice mixture, coffee, granola with wild strawberries, and muffins.

“Wonderful Hosts!”

Sally and Tom's charmingly updated farmhouse is warm, comfortable, and right next to the Gustavus Inn (a superb dinner option.) Due to some mixed-up flight details, Sally had to make three trips to the airport to pick up the 4 of us and get us to the Gustavus Inn in time for a GREAT dinner. A short stroll later we were tucked into the two delightful upstairs rooms, plus a pleasant sitting/TV room. The morning's breakfast was outstanding with very enjoyable conversation with Tom and Sally. The house, gardens, and surroundings are picturesque as one would expect in Gustavus.

“Idyllic family escape”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2009

Sally & Tom's Homestead B&B is exactly what it says - a "home"stead. Fabulous home-farmed home-cooked breakfasts, big lawns with hens, ducks and a dog. But all with a lovely low-key non-intrusive feel. A guest living room upstairs with Wireless, TV & DVD was a nice extra. As were bikes for guests to use. All amidst the beautifully-undeveloped scrubby backwater of little Gustavus. See both now before they're gone forever.
As an aside, we also had phenomenal food at the Gustavus Inn. And good pizza at the Homeshore. We also had good food - though Aramark run - at the Glacier Bay Lodge.
As for excursions, the official Glacier Bay boat trip was a great disappointment (very expensive, commercial and long, without really seeing much of the overall glaciers - for the same price you can see the glaciers from above by charter plane - where the real glacial beauty lies). However do not miss Todd's Whale Watching Tour (the very best whale watching experience we've had from Iceland to the Caribbean - engines off, all we could see and hear were Humpbacks, Sea Otters and Bald Eagles).
Teenagers however would absolutely hate Gustavus, as would those looking for a lively nightlife - there isn't any. As would those who need shopping, luxury or lots of dining choices to have fun. We however loved it.

“My Favorite Bed and Breakfast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2008

This is a charming bed and breakfast in the wonderful town of Gustavus. Gustavus is where you go if you are going to Glacier Bay National Park. I highly recommend staying at a B and B in gustavus instead of staying at the more touristy glacier bay lodge and after having been on the island for four days, I really think that the Homestead is the nicest.

The bright blue building only has two bedrooms for guests, so this is an intimate b and b. That being said, the host, Sally, is not intrusive and extremely helpful. We booked all our activities through her, sea kayaking and the pricey but worth it Glacier Bay Cruise.

Sally prepared us really great breakfasts every morning. She was very flexible whether she had breakfast for us later in the morning or really early depending on our day's plan.

The B and B is centrally located, close to the center of town, where the restaurant is as well as the local gift shop and gallery.

Sally had bicycles for us which were perfect for exploring the island.

I don't relax easily and the Homestead B and B was the perfect place for me to unwind. My wife and I had a truly wonderful stay and I'd recommend this place to anyone. Although it is far from home, I'd love to come back.

  • Liked — Honestly, everything. A truly wonderful place to stay!
  • Disliked — I have nothing negative to say about Homestead B and B
