Sally & Tom's Homestead B&B is exactly what it says - a "home"stead. Fabulous home-farmed home-cooked breakfasts, big lawns with hens, ducks and a dog. But all with a lovely low-key non-intrusive feel. A guest living room upstairs with Wireless, TV & DVD was a nice extra. As were bikes for guests to use. All amidst the beautifully-undeveloped scrubby backwater of little Gustavus. See both now before they're gone forever.
As an aside, we also had phenomenal food at the Gustavus Inn. And good pizza at the Homeshore. We also had good food - though Aramark run - at the Glacier Bay Lodge.
As for excursions, the official Glacier Bay boat trip was a great disappointment (very expensive, commercial and long, without really seeing much of the overall glaciers - for the same price you can see the glaciers from above by charter plane - where the real glacial beauty lies). However do not miss Todd's Whale Watching Tour (the very best whale watching experience we've had from Iceland to the Caribbean - engines off, all we could see and hear were Humpbacks, Sea Otters and Bald Eagles).
Teenagers however would absolutely hate Gustavus, as would those looking for a lively nightlife - there isn't any. As would those who need shopping, luxury or lots of dining choices to have fun. We however loved it.
