“Mistake”

I am mad at myself. I made a poor decision when I decided to stay at the Breath Inn on the way to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. I had a chance to stay at a chain motel in Silver City but I decided for just a few dollars more to get a promised suite at the Breath Inn.

Prior to arriving I had called and spoke to the owner via telephone. He first told me a double room was sixty some dollars. When I told him we were a family of two adults and three children he told me we would have to get a suite and that would be $119.00. I told him the children could sleep on the floor on air mattresses (as they have for the last two weeks). The man replied the rooms were way too small and he was right! When I later called to ask about what kind of room that would be an older female answered and told me she was not sure. A younger female then took the call and advised there would be two full beds and a queen in two rooms. The price would now be $122.00 and that was tax and everything.

At the time of the last call I was sitting in front of the Econo Lodge in Sliver City. That room with two double beds on the second floor would have been $102 with tax. That included a hot breakfast and the place had phone, fridge, and pool. I decided to take a chance. What a mistake that was.

We arrived at the Breath Inn and walked in the Lobby / restaurant. We waited for a few moments and the waitress who must have doubled as a desk clerk came to the desk. As she checked us in I asked about the Wi-Fi and she had no idea of what I was talking about. When I asked about how to access the Internet signal she said she did not know if there was an Internet signal. Then she told me she had to go and check if the water heater for the room was turned on. That was a real bad sign. Finally she went to ask the man who appeared to be the owner where the remote for the TV was. Yes, they keep the remotes for the TVs in the office in little cubby holes like the old motels used to keep mail and keys in.

During this time I was able to have some drama as the owner berated the waitress/desk clerk for not taking wine to some people who were waiting on the wine and salad at their table. I think it was poor judgment to do that in front of not only my child and I, but the couple of people who were also at the desk deciding if they would stay or not. By the way they purchased can drinks at the reasonable price of $1.00 and left without a room.

The owner then proceeded to check us in with a rate of $131.00 I protested that I had been told the total would be $122.00 by the girl on the phone. The owner told me that I spoke to him first and that $131.00 was the price. I was going to argue but I did not want to drive back to Silver City. I then asked about the procedure of how to login to the network and the man said he had told me on the phone. I said no, do you have a login or password or is the network open access. He then replied the network was open, which I like. However the man was surly and not very friendly.

We went to our room. I did not like the rooms. They seemed dated and worn. At least there was no phone to disturb us as the rooms did not have phones. Also forget the ice machine as there were no ice buckets in the rooms. I did get my hopes up when I saw the little wooden enclosure that apparently held the room fridge. I was shocked when I opened it and found a small water heater with the inspection plate sitting off to the side exposing live electrical contacts. I am pretty sure that fails the kid or pet safe standards. The sagging ceiling gave the place a creepy feel like a no tell motel. Also I reckon it is easier to put a second Curtin rod holder up if the first breaks. Our curtain appeared to be almost at its failure point as the rod hung precariously. When I checked the air conditioner at about 8:00 P.M. to see why the room was warmer than the outside I found what appeared to be a used band aid on the air conditioner filter. However all was not lost. As my wife watched the 70’s show on the small TV I felt as though I was in the studio audience due to the 70’s type motif in the room

See the attached pictures for documentation. If anyone finds anything they disagree with in this review please contact me and I will discuss it. I just had a crappy experience here and the Breath Inn is the type of place that puts you in the position of staying there or driving a very long time to find lodging. In my opinion work needs to be done on the rooms along with the attitude and knowledge of the staff.

“I wish I could live here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2010

Reasonably priced, nice accommodations, great food, friendly staff, beautiful area. Very relaxing and quiet. From my bedroom window I could hear the stream across the road. Very little traffic. I loved sitting on the great porches. Hummingbirds and wild turkeys - delightful.

“Pleasant place in a wonderful location, dog friendly, good value, great birding.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2009

Worth the visit just to meet the owner, Jack, and watch the jays at the feeders. Mexican Jays, Steller's Jays and Western Scrub Jays all at once. We hear the hummingbirds are great in the summer. Small, rustic rooms but very quiet this time of year. Great food in the dining room...the green chile cheeseburger is wonderful.

“If you value a good night's sleep, this isn't the place for you.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2009

If you value a good night's sleep, this isn't the place for you. The rooms though rustic are reasonably clean and comfortable. We feel asleep with our window open to the cool mountain air and chirping of crickets. Around 11:30 pm we were jolted awake by a salvo of loud music and conversation. The source of the distubance was a mere stoned throw from our window. The scene was lit by a blazing bonfire (National Forest, Fire Danger High!). We recognized the proprietor/chef and wait staff among the party goers. To be fair, the music was silenced after a few minutes but the damage was done. Closing the window, drawing the curtains, and cranking up the air conditioner muffled the noises but we were awake until around 3 AM. The party was still going on at that time.

It is unfortunate. This is a peaceful location. With the management showing so little regard for paying guests, its no wonder the parking lot was virtually empty.

“Like a Port in a Storm”

We needed a place to stay and found it on a heavily booked weekend - by recommendation from a fully booked motel nearby. The Breathe Inn is a good value considering its location so far away from most everything. The Gila Wilderness covers a vast region and if you are visiting the Gila Cliff Dwellings, you might choose to stay in Silver City. We chose the Breathe Inn, on the winding road to the monument, an hour north in the wilderness and away from most creature comforts like cell phone coverage.

The Breathe Inn is close (about 45 minutes) to the national monument and their attitude is what won me over. They accepted our well-mannered dogs, and have a good restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. When I am staying somewhere, I want to see some smiles, wished a safe journey, and invited back. They delivered. Also the hummingbirds were fantastic!

Having bought the property a year ago, the owner explained they are working hard to bring it up. I think they'll succeed if they apply some remodeling to the rooms. Rather than rustica cabins, it's more late 70's paneling. We were comfortable in the bed and the price was cheap. It's not the Ritz but the when the rain poured for several hours, it was dry and warm, with nice company at the restaurant.

So, we got to experience the quiet of the wilderness, watch the wildlife, and pop down to the restaurant for a decent meal. Not bad at all for a simple traveler.

  • Liked — Reasonable price in difficult to find area.
  • Disliked — Smaller, older rooms that need some remodelling.
