“Good Wooden roller coaster”

The Cyclone Roller Coaster is located within astroland amusement park in Coney island. It has been around since 1927, but the fun is definately still there. This coaster gets up to speed of 60mph and has over 12 drops within the tracks. It doesnt look like a big coaster sitting on such a small piece of land, but it crosses over itself many times. So there is a lot of ride crammed in that small space. The drops are exciting and the twists and turns fun. Also you get great air time on this ride. Expect to lift up off your seat a couple times! This coaster doesnt jerk you around or bang your head. So you will have fun and even want to ride again. There was no wait for this ride when I went. This was great. A coaster with no lines!! Beats some of them other amusement parks!

You do not pay admission to astroland. At this amusement park, you buy tickets for the individual rides that you want to ride. So this is nice. If you just want to ride the Cyclone..you just buy the ticket for it. When I went this past summer (2007) tickets were $6.00 for the 1st ride. If you want to ride again, make sure you have money in your pockets--because you can pay right at the coaster and ride again for $4.00. <I didnt know this and didnt have any money in hand.> So, if you want to ride again--or have kids who might want to ride again--make sure you send them on the ride with money in their pockets.

Just with roller coasters at regular "admission" amusement parks, you can get a souvenier photo of yourself riding the Cyclone. Just outside the ticket booth is the souvenier booth, complete with photo souveniers. I had to get a souvenier photo keyring, especially since it was the coaster's 80th anniversary. It was pretty cheap (less than 10 dollars).

Astroland does have other kiddie rides as well as the Wonder Wheel Ferris Wheel. I have never ridden any of the others. I believe the Cyclone is their main attraction. But it is nice to have a mixture of smaller rides available for the younger kids. Seniors and adults may enjoy the ferris wheel. Teens and adults of all ages will love the Cyclone Wooden Coaster.

Nearby the astroland amusement park & cyclone roller coaster is the NY Aquarium, Nathan's Coney Island hot dogs, Coney island beaches/boardwalk and the baseball stadium. I would recommened making a day of your visit and spending a few hours at the aquarium in the morning, then perhaps a ride or two on the cyclone, then lunch at nathans and an afternoon at the beach. It appears that the area is being cleaned up--brought back to life. It was much nicer there this past summer versus a few years ago. They even put some fake palm trees on the beach that spray/mist water (like at amusement parks). There are public restrooms/bathouses at this beach.

Parking is the main problem with this area. It is always crowded and hard to find parking on the street. I know there is parking at the nearby NY Aquarium for a fee.
