“Very rude staff, unsafe staircase, unsympathetic to disabled”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

This is a review of the first time I went to Bertram before the September visit. I was visiting my son and grandson and had a terrible attack of gout in my toes. I could not walk. I asked if I could check in early. I was given an rude no. Ok, understand that. But I couldn't walk , so I asked if I could come early and sit in lobby and do work on laptop. A reluctant yes was given. When I came in disabled and with my dog which they allow , I was given such attitude. I was in pain and just wanted to relax. It was like me asking at two to sit in lobby was such a hardship for them. Really? That is a big deal? When I finally got my room it was on the third floor. No longer were there lovely antiques, but rather garage sale quality furniture, small room, awful bathroom, lousy plumbing. The staircase up was dangerous , narrow, no handicap access anywhere. It was a winding very narrow passage. No one helped with luggage and I could hardly walk.
I stayed there one more time after this when I was in area with my dog. Again staff was awful, very unprofessional and as on first visit inaccessible. I was told by manager that this was not the place for me when I requested not to be on third floor. I am thinking he found my poor review of him and his staff unwelcome as well as not wanting to have to accomodate any disability. I hope this inn changes management eventually, upgrades third floor and staircase and trains staff to be professional!

Room Tip: Don't stay on third floor. Ask specific questions about any room you are thinking go staying in.

Dear guest,

I am sorry that you felt the need to post a third negative review about us after two reservations. In light of your complaints, I feel the need to defend our property against what I feel to be an unfair and willful misrepresentation on your part:

Our check-in time begins at 3:00PM. We inform all guests as to this time verbally, in a confirmation email and plainly on our website in order to not foul your expectations upon arrival.

It is true that your reservation was on the third floor of the property. This was the room that you knowingly booked after your first stay with us. For our mobility-restricted guests, we have fully handicap-accessible rooms across the street at our sister property, The Samuel Sewall Inn.

Did you take the opportunity to request assistance with your luggage? I consider exemplary service our hallmark, and we never decline to offer help. Rather, we make a point of asking how we can help better.

You claim our staff was inaccessible, however we are always on site, reachable by no less than 3 means at any time during office hours, and by phone overnight. We perform many tasks, and as such, cannot possibly stay in the office exclusively.

Last, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, I have never once penalized a guest in any manner based on the posting of unbiased reviews, as you suggested in your written critique as well as on the phone when we spoke. You were asked to find alternate accommodations due to your inappropriate and unwelcome behavior. Multiple guests submitted complaints to me regarding this behavior, and I was left no alternative other than politely ask you to seek other accommodations. Thank you for reading my perspective, and I sincerely hope that you find the lodging solution that fits you best.

“Best B and B”

This B and B was recommended by a friend and was not disappointing. The decor is immaculate, the staff friendly and helpful. Rooms are excellent. Close to great shopping and restaurants and the train is minutes away. Would stay there again.

Room Tip: Go to their website and have a look at the photos very true to what is displayed. Corner suites seem...

“Disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

Beginning impression was positive but this didn't last after our first night of a three night stay. Upon returning to the Inn at the end of our second day there was a letter attached to the front door with our name on it and the inscription "Open Immediately." The letter went on to explain that we had inadvertently been put in the wrong room and that they had moved all our possessions into another (and much less desirable) room from the second to the third floor. Their apology was accompanied with a bottle of wine in our new room (we don't drink). All of our belongings were completely in disarray as if they had just been scooped up and "dumped" into a small closet that had no light. The bed was a double bed (downsized from a Queen) although they told us the bathroom was much larger. It took them another day to find my phone charger which was left in the other room. Needless to say after much complaining about what felt like a total invasion of privacy, they credited my credit card for one night. On the positive side I will say that the Inn is clean, quaint, the food was very good, and it's only a block away from the Green Line. That being said, we will be staying somewhere else when we return in May.

Room Tip: Room 10 which we were given the first night was quite good (roomy, pretty quiet, comfortable bed...

Dear Bruce,

We’re sorry to read your review. It all started with a human error. Our Innkeeper that made the mistake still feels awful about it, more so since this is the 1st time this happened in all the time she’s been here.

Given the chance, we did all that we could in order to have this mistake fixed.
You had booked a Standard room and received, by mistake, a free upgrade to our lovely Deluxe room. Due to the confusion, we refunded your card in full for that night, as a sincere apology. You were in fact never downsized; but, on the contrary, upgraded for the 1st night and then put in the correct room type that you had booked.
We understand the inconvenience that our mistake caused you. After talking to you, we understood that apologizing and giving you a refund for one night were enough to make you feel that amends had been sufficiently made. It seems like our gestures of apology were not enough to keep you from posting a negative review.

If you decide to book with us again we will do all we can to make sure that you are satisfied with your accommodations.

Sincerely,

The Innkeepers and Management

“Friendly personnel, easy access to downtown Boston”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

When we first arrived at the Bertram Inn, we were met by a lovely young lady (unfortunately we forgot her name) who showed us to our rooms, explained that there was coffee/ tea and cookies available at all times in the living room and who was more than happy to help us find our way around Boston and Brookline.

The room itself was quite spacious. We did request for an extra bed one week prior to our stay due to a change of plans, which made the room a bit smaller, but for two guests room 5 had more than enough space. Our bathroom was not ensuite but just a little down the hall. We didn't mind that too much as the B&B really has a very homely feeling to it, so it just felt like going to the bathroom at home.

Breakfast was lovely and varied, however, on one specific morning we apparently got up too late because around half an hour before the breakfast ended, all food had already been eaten. We asked for more scones, buns or bagels and we did get some, but the buffet itself was not filled again.

Brookline is about 20 minutes from downtown Boston (MIT/ Harvard) by T line. The closest stop is actually just around the corner from the Bertram Inn (about 2-minute walk).

We would definitely stay at this B&B again. It is true that there are B&Bs which are closer to Boston, but the personnel was so friendly and accomodating that we just have to recommend it to future visitors of Boston.

“Great place to stay when visiting the Boston area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

My wife and I stayed at the Bertram Inn for three days in October and we found it a great place to stay.
The inn is in a residential area of Brookline and within a few minutes walk to public transit and shops.
We found the inn to be nicely decorated in the Victorian style that we both enjoy. We stayed on the main floor, but noise from lobby traffic was minimal.
As for our room, it was very cozy, nicely decorated and the king bed was very comfortable. We appreciated the turn-down service as well. It was a great room to relax and refresh after a long day of pounding the pavement in the big city.
The front desk staff was very helpful with answering questions we had about nearby atttractions and places to eat.
The breakfast was very nice with an assortment of fresh fruits, cereal, muffins and rolls. The hot items during our stay changed daily, with biscuits and gravy and a quiche dish.
We will definately stay at the Bertram Inn in the future.
