This is a review of the first time I went to Bertram before the September visit. I was visiting my son and grandson and had a terrible attack of gout in my toes. I could not walk. I asked if I could check in early. I was given an rude no. Ok, understand that. But I couldn't walk , so I asked if I could come early and sit in lobby and do work on laptop. A reluctant yes was given. When I came in disabled and with my dog which they allow , I was given such attitude. I was in pain and just wanted to relax. It was like me asking at two to sit in lobby was such a hardship for them. Really? That is a big deal? When I finally got my room it was on the third floor. No longer were there lovely antiques, but rather garage sale quality furniture, small room, awful bathroom, lousy plumbing. The staircase up was dangerous , narrow, no handicap access anywhere. It was a winding very narrow passage. No one helped with luggage and I could hardly walk.
I stayed there one more time after this when I was in area with my dog. Again staff was awful, very unprofessional and as on first visit inaccessible. I was told by manager that this was not the place for me when I requested not to be on third floor. I am thinking he found my poor review of him and his staff unwelcome as well as not wanting to have to accomodate any disability. I hope this inn changes management eventually, upgrades third floor and staircase and trains staff to be professional!
Room Tip: Don't stay on third floor. Ask specific questions about any room you are thinking go staying in.

Dear guest,
I am sorry that you felt the need to post a third negative review about us after two reservations. In light of your complaints, I feel the need to defend our property against what I feel to be an unfair and willful misrepresentation on your part:
Our check-in time begins at 3:00PM. We inform all guests as to this time verbally, in a confirmation email and plainly on our website in order to not foul your expectations upon arrival.
It is true that your reservation was on the third floor of the property. This was the room that you knowingly booked after your first stay with us. For our mobility-restricted guests, we have fully handicap-accessible rooms across the street at our sister property, The Samuel Sewall Inn.
Did you take the opportunity to request assistance with your luggage? I consider exemplary service our hallmark, and we never decline to offer help. Rather, we make a point of asking how we can help better.
You claim our staff was inaccessible, however we are always on site, reachable by no less than 3 means at any time during office hours, and by phone overnight. We perform many tasks, and as such, cannot possibly stay in the office exclusively.
Last, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, I have never once penalized a guest in any manner based on the posting of unbiased reviews, as you suggested in your written critique as well as on the phone when we spoke. You were asked to find alternate accommodations due to your inappropriate and unwelcome behavior. Multiple guests submitted complaints to me regarding this behavior, and I was left no alternative other than politely ask you to seek other accommodations. Thank you for reading my perspective, and I sincerely hope that you find the lodging solution that fits you best.
