My mother and I were looking for an affordable place that she and I could share that included a bathroom and two beds with enough space that we wouldn't be at each others necks by the end of our Big Apple trip. Well, if you have done ANY research on "cheap" accomodations in NYC you will know that anything under $200/night during the time we stayed is almost IMPOSSIBLE to come by unless you are prepared to shack up in a youth hostile in cramped/shared accomodations not to mention questionable neighborhoods.
Praise God for the Oxbridge Theater Apartments! They were clean, spacious, comfortable, recently upgraded in certain areas and close to MANY of the touristy attractions: 2 blocks east of Times Square and the theater district, 1 block west of 5th ave shopping, right around the corner from Radio City Music Hall and Rockafellar Center. The subway is one block away right around the corner so you are within a 5 - 10 min ride to Central Park, Soho, China Town, and every amazing restaurant you have ever dreamed of!
Before our arrival I contacted a friend of mine who actually lives in Manhattan and she assured me that area ("Little Brazil") was a great area. As you can see from my description above, she was right! I felt safe staying here. Two girls traveling alone in a big city can often times seem a little sketchy but, at night time people are out everywhere due to the tourist attractions nearby. Also, the front door to the bldg locks in the evening and the management will provide you with an access code. There is also another door up the first flight of stairs, which also needs an additional access code making it difficult for random city weirdos to wander up to your room.
This is NOT a 5 star hotel so, if you are looking for The Four Seasons then you will need to look elsewhere. However, if you are used to "roughing it" a bit (no room service, no maid service, and lived-in furniture) this place is awesome! The bathroom fixtures and furniture looked recently upgraded as well as spotlessly CLEAN! They also supply the room with cleaning products if their cleaning job does not agree with you. Nice hardwood floors throughout (not in the bath), a sofa and love seat, and a small breakfast-type dining table w/chairs. There was a TV in the room as well as a CD player but I can not say that the TV had the best selections of channels. The kitchen was great. Brand new refridgerator and counter top. Cabinets full of dishes and utensils. There was also a roll away bed in the room in addition to the sofa bed and full/queen bed in the bedroom. We didn't need air conditioning or heat during our stay but, I did attempt to turn on the AC, which seemed to be non-functioning.
All in all I thought this place was great for the price, location, and accomodations! I would stay here again in a heartbeat. OH speaking of heart beats, if your heart has issues with beating you may want to consider the fact that this bldg is an OLD bldg and there is NO elevator. I am young and it was no problem for me but, if you are lugging 50lbs of luggage up 5 flights of stairs, this may be an issue.
Finally, when mom and I arrived we had a hard time finding the place seeing as there was only an address on the front door, not to mention that the front door was hidden in between two restaurants/cafes. My first thought was "SCAM" but, we walked up the first flight of stairs to find a piece of paper taped to the door of this sewing company stating "Oxbridge Reception". I had called the phone number that was given to us at the time of booking in search of some help (before we decided to walk up the stairs) and the "landlord" was very curtious and helpful and was always quick to return my calls.
If you want to experience NYC then this is the place for you!!! and your 4 friends!!
