Obviously this review can only deal with the apartment we rented, which was the two bedroom Apartment Sol. The property was easy to find from 2nd Avenue station, a 5 minute walk. It was extremely clean and characterful.
The area is tremendously convenient. There are numerous restaurants and they cater to locals, not tourists, so they are fairly priced and of good quality. Just by 2nd Avenue station is Whole Foods, a terrific grocery store / delicatessen, where you can buy delicious things to eat in. The downside: OK, there are homeless shelters about. There is one two doors along the street. However, we had absolutely no problems - no noise and no-one asked us for money. I'd be amazed if anyone felt uncomfortable here.
Apartment Sol was billed as suitable for up to six people, but I personally wouldn't consider booking it for a party bigger than four. There's only one bathroom, and the second bedroom is actually a sleeping alcove just large enough for a double bed with no floor space, separated from the main living area by a screen door.
The property is old and attractive for it, but you will hear noise from above and there are quirks - we had to run the hot taps to get the hot water going in the shower. It feels petty to mention this kind of stuff, but you are not paying a budget rate (although the price is competitive).
Little tip: the information pack from the owner is a bit overdramatic about the risks of travelling from the airport on the subway. The 'A' train is not one of the world's great travel experiences, and I'd be wary of it late at night, but if you are arriving at other times there will be loads of other passengers and you'll be fine. You catch the airport train to Howard Beach, pay $5 at the exit barrier where there are lots of helpful staff, and at that point you can buy your 7-day MetroCard either from a machine or the ticket booth. Then go to the platform for Manhattan, catch the first train and get off at Jay Street - Metro Tech where there is a cross-platform interchange (i.e. the F train to 2 Av goes from the opposite side of the same platform, so no stairs). Will take about 1 hour 15 minutes door-to-door, probably quicker than a taxi in rush hour.
