“great location, first rate service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

My wife and I just returned from a five night business trip to the City and stayed at Hotel 36 (Doubletree) based on price and reviews we read on this site and Bookin.com. We had a wonderful stay and found the hotel not only in a tremendous location but run by a young energetic, thoughtful and eager to please staff. Despite the fact that their computer system went down the blink for two days and the business area and computer were not working and that staff had to open all doors everyone (guests and staff) adjusted dealt with the inconvenience professionally and in a timely manner and we did not hear one complaint. We booked a room with a king bed that was very clean with nice modern bathroom and great shower but exceptionally small. THey allowed us to switch the next day to a double on the same floor (making for an easy move). The new room was larger with more drawer space and a small fridge. They have a restaurant and serve a buffet breakfast that looked delicious but was not included. sThe bar in the lounge had a very pleasant bartender who made the early evening very pleasant with a generous pour. There is also a pretty good fitness room in the basement with two treadmills and two ellipticals and some free weights, the cardio equipment have installed tvs. A very pleasant stay at a most reasonable price we will absolutely return. As we were working at the Javits Center location was perfect an easy four block walk downhill to boot. Loved it.

Room Tip: the rooms with double beds are larger than rooms with kings, if you want more space book a double.

“Room was small but your not in it much”

Only 1 lift services the whole hotel, making mornings a bit slow. Great location, easy walk to buses, subway, Penn Station, Time Square etc.

“Great location, good rooms, but noisy & staff AWFUL.”

I would have rated this hotel much higher - the location is perfect and I have no complaints with their comfortable rooms - but the staff need to improve ASAP.

I booked an overnight stay for Jan 1. At 3 am on Jan 2nd, someone slips an "express checkout" receipt under my door. Ok. Then at 9 am, I'm awoken by loud banging on my door and seconds later, I hear the person outside trying to open my door with a keycard. I jump out of bed to tell her we are checking out by noon (as the checkout rules allow) and she goes away. I try to go back to sleep for another hour or so, but how can I after being so rudely interrupted? There's also a lot of loud banging sounds out in the hallway. As if this wasn't enough, I'm disturbed yet AGAIN at 11 am by ANOTHER staff about my checkout time, definitely a manager this time.

We had planned to leave by noon and we did, as we are respectful guests no matter where we are and never have trouble following reasonable hotel policies. Our checkout time stated BEFORE NOON. If you want to know what time I'm checking out, why didn't you ask when I checked in, & then let your floor staff know!? I was made to feel as if they already had my money, I've spent the night, now get out. The rude interruptions were so unacceptable, they bordered on thuggish!

And then a few days after I get back, I check my bank statements and find a pending charge from the hotel, which I find out is a temporary charge for "incidentals." The front desk person who checked us in said nothing about this charge. Although it has been removed (took one week after my stay,) again I did not appreciate the unpleasant surprise of seeing a $50 charge when I thought I had paid up the bill. Not to mention the inconvenience of having to call the hotel and find out what the charge is for.

It doesn't matter that the hotel is in transition. I would have been more forgiving if the appearance of the hotel was less attractive, or some services were out of order, but for a hotel that used to be Wyndham Garden, there's no excuse for the staff being so unprofessional.

Stay here for the convenience, stay away if you wish to avoid a service nightmare!

“Now called - Double Tree Hilton”

If like us you are one of the people who booked this hotel last year, you may not know that the hotel is currently in a state of transition. In short it has changed ownership from the previous owners when it was known as 'Wyndham Gardens', to interim name of 'Hotel 36', and then finally to relaunch as 'Hilton Double Tree'. We stayed at the hotel over the last six nights and during that short time we stayed in their best room '2608'. This is on the top '26th' floor and the views were truly spectacular. When sitting on the king size bed we had clear views of the empire state building close by, the illuminated New Yorker hotel, and then the freedom tower in the distance. At night the view over the city was stunning, plus sunset again staggering. Get this room and you won't regret it. During our six night stay the staff have worked day and night without disturbing guests to transorm the hotel into the Hilton brand. Well done to them and the especially the front of house guys who were very helpful. Some have complained about the room sizes which aren't huge, but rather compact. We stiil had plenty room. As for breakfast, this was provided free as continental style. Again no problem with this. Also the hotel gave free wifi access which together with the breakfast, saved a few dollars. Location wise this hotel is bang on the money for all that Times Sqqaure has to offer and if your a sports fan Madison Square Garden is 2 blocks away. Whilst there check out 'Nick & Steffs' steak house for arguably the best food and service we've ever had from a restaurant (do try the steak cut chips!!). Anyhow, back to the hotel. The lifts are fast but during busy times you can be waiting a few minutes for the next one. Apart from this we have no complaints at all, and if your a traveller on a budget who wants to be in the middle of the action - choose this one - but remember to get a room on the front and close to the top if you want to enjoy the city view. Room 2608 is the best!!

“Great Location, Rooms very small”

Stayed over New Year 2011/2012 and they were full. What a time to decide to do renovations to the hotel! The restaurants, gym, roof terrance were all closed. All very inconvenient and did hear alot of the guests complaining.
The rooms are very small for 4 people, and in our room one of the double beds was pushed up against the wall so you had to climb across the bed to get into it. Also there is no where to put luggage within the room. Did ask to be moved to a larger room but were told we were in one of their biggest rooms!!! Would be ok for 2 people, but a real squash for 4.
Staff friendly, but the best part about the hotel is its location. Between 8th and 9th Street, on West 36th so really great area, 5 min walk to Madison Sq garden and about 8 mins to Times Square so easy to walk to most of the tourist spots. Also we walked down to the HighLine which is just off 10th Street which is really worth a look.
Have been to NYC many times and this is the cheapest hotel we have stayed in, but it could do with being cheaper for the size of the rooms!!
