My husband and I recently planned an impromtu, overnight anniversary outing with dinner at Hells Backbone Grill in Boulder, drive up hwy 12 (one of our favorites) and the next day in Torrey. The Boulder accommodations were all booked so we settled on early dinner at Hells followed by a drive to Torrey that night. We wanted something special so based on reviews here I called the Torrey Pines B&B. We stayed in their condo that is out on the back of the property, a short ways from the cottage and main house. When we arrived in the dark, we stopped at the main house for directions and were immediately greeted by their darling lab mix, Schatzie who never met a stranger, loves pets and playing fetch with rocks....yes, rocks. Eldon invited us in for a drink, while waiting for Erika to get back from town, but she returned immediately so we declined.
Our condo was a large 1bdrm/1bth with fully equipped kitchen ( we only used for morning coffee) good size living area and nice windows with lovely views from living areas and bedroom. I've never stayed in any property that was more immaculate. The king bed had a wonderful mattress and bedding. Our elderly backs aren't easy to please, but we slept like babies.
Early the next morning Schatzie took us for a lovely guided tour around the property, showing us her favorite places to chase rabbits, the beautiful Torrey red cliff views and the extensive work that the owners have done to create this large B & B. Even though it's right off hwy 12, near the intersection of 24, it's very peaceful, quiet and a world of it's own.
Our condo didn't include their breakfast (which was optional) but we had already decided to drive into Austins for something simple from the deli. We stopped at the main house to give Erika two jars of UT honey that I had seasoned with our home grown rosemary, sage & thyme. The breakfast aromas coming from their kitchen, where happy guests were chatting over plates of waffles and fruit, were wonderful. I wondered if our decision to pass on their luscious breakfast, for lighter fare, might have been a mistake?
Erika and Eldon were both lovely, warm and charming. They were appreciative of the honey so Eldon gave us a polished stone from his collection of "gastoliths".....quite a treasure and something we'll always value. Their property was originally a quarry, when they purchased it 15 years ago. Following years of work to haul off the old abandoned equipment and have tons of fill dirt brought in to fill the quarries, they could then begin the labor of building their beautiful home, cottage, condo and the extensive rock, landscape and irrigation projects. A visiting geologist informed them that the polished stones dug up on their property are gastroliths......stones polished in the stomachs of dinosaurs that inhabited that area millions of years ago. They served the same purpose as todays "gizzard stones" or the small gravel swallowed by some birds, to help with digestion. The Reeds later had that substantiated by a park ranger at Capitol Reef Nat. Park......impressive stuff.
Our condo also had a variety of great information regarding the area, hikes, day trips, outfitter resources, maps, etc which would be very helpful, even for folks like us who have been there numerous times.
We would normally stay someplace a bit more economical, but for a special outing the Torrey Pines B&B was perfect.
