Just had a great stay at the US Grant. Staff is very responsive to all your inquiries and needs. Love staying here whenever I am in San Diego. Delicious food so you don't even have to go out of the hotel!
We stayed here for 3 nights in January. We had just come from a convention and wound up in a motel that left just about everything to be desired, so our time at The US Grant was a major upgrade in every way. The bed was incredibly comfortable. The bathroom was very modern. I tend to look at the bathroom before I'll book a hotel; I want a modern, renovated and tiled bathroom, which the US Grant had. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They also delivered a free newspaper each morning, which came in a bag that had Newspaper embroidered on it. And the location was great. We walked everywhere and for the excursions, we were right on the bus line. So, we just walked out our front door and crossed the street to get on the bus to the zoo.
Note: Granted, the room always smelled like lavander after the housekeeping came, so if you have any sensitivities to strong perfume-like smells, I'd request that they not use them in your room.
My only issue: We did go to the hotel's restaurant one night for dinner and it was pretty expensive for the options. And, they really did not have much in the way of vegetarian options. For the price, I did not find that the food was worth it. But we were exhausted and didn't feel like heading out that night, as we had just gotten in the previous night at about 1:00 am after a trade show in Anaheim.
I'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a hotel in San Diego.
The short: 4 nights with a 5-mo-old baby for a business/leisure visit went well because the staff honored each of our requests and paid attention to our needs. Found the common areas and room to be exceptionally well decorated and in good condition.
I had a conference across the street on Sun-Tues so we stayed Fri-Tuesday; our first hotel experience with our new (and only) baby. After an uneventful booking on the hotel's website with the request to stay above the 4th floor (as recommended by other TripAdvisor users), we called ahead also to alert them we'd have a baby with us. They acknowledged the ^4th floor request and recommended an accessible room. We also requested a fridge and microwave for the room, because they didn't come standard.
OK - so, the "accessible" room really worked out for us, but beware if you're sensitive to noise: the accessible rooms seems to be located around the elevators. It didn't bother us one bit but might to more sensitive sleepers. In fact, these rooms are slightly larger, which we welcomed a lot. (besides, if you're in any hotel in a room next to a baby-carrying family... like us.... you won't hear the elevators or people chatting outside). These rooms are also closer into the back-center of the building that you don't get much daylight. The fridge and microwave weren't in the room when we arrived, but showed up just minutes after a single call to housekeeping.
We're used to 4-star hotels. I'd say this one is a 4.5. I thought the decor throughout was just right. Very tasteful (unless you don't like a dark shade of periwinkle blue). If you visit, take a walk down a hallway in one of the wings and keep your eyes fixed on the mirror at the end.... unless you're easily spooked it's fun to imagine yourself on the Haunted Mansion ride. OK, back to seriousness - the bathroom was very nice. The carpeting was notably a nice 5-star feature. The mattresses were the only sub-par part of the room; maybe they're just up for a refresh. They weren't bothersome, but still creaky, weakening springs, etc.
We made several other additional requests to the staff during our stay, and were very happy with how responsive they were. Very professional.
Finally - a note about the area. Overall downtown San Diego is a fine place to stay. But if one bum or one siren is going to ruin your stay (as reported by other reviews of this and other area hotels), then you probably shouldn't ever leave your suburb. All in all, I'd say the immediate area around The US Grant hotel was marginally better in a lower riff-raff ratio than other nearby hotels. I felt safe enough to walk the baby around at 10pm. As a point of reference, the homeless situation is downtown San Diego is noticeable but magnitudes less of an issue than, say, San Francisco. But I feel there's an unusually large number of smokers around downtown San Diego.
Overall pros:
* Great staff
* Very nice features
* Probably the best location in Downtown San Diego
Overall cons:
* Charged for Internet (not unique to this hotel but I still consider this absurd anywhere in a first-world country)
* Downtown area means you can't get away 100% from bums and echoing sirens
Stayed here on business for a week. Central location, great restoration of historic hotel, great bar and restaurant (and I generally hate hotel restaurants so this is really interesting), high level of service.
AMAZING and BEAUTFUL and THOUGHTFUL hotel!! I went here for a conference at the Hilton Bayfront and was worried that it was going to be too far (not knowing traffic and streets), however the US Grant is just a mile or so away and traffic is not bad at all despite the amount of people on the road. The room was very clean and artistic, the bed was amazing, the room service (while slightly too expensive) always was on time and delicious, and the tv had all my fav channels and at the end of the day, it was awesome to come back and watch my housewives :)
I cannot say enough with the amazingness of this hotel. The staff is exceptional and handles every request I had with promptness. For all you ladies out there, you know how bad your feet can feel after walking all day in heels... I asked if they had any bandaids for my feet and they brought me so many in different sizes... I love that kind of thoughfulness.
The valet is so kind and just as amazing as the guest services staff. They were able to tell my taxis various directions to restaurants and even helped me out of a cramped shuttle bus (keep in mind, along with those heels and sore feet I was talking about earlier, I had a pencil skirt on which is not the best in climbing out of packed shuttle vans).
You can tell that the management takes pride in its staff and strongly encourages customer service and quality. I am the type of person that likes and pays attention to detail and you can clearly see they do as well.
One last note: Turn down service is exceptional!!
