We enjoyed our weekend get away to San Diego. Walking distance to Little Italy. Just a short walk to the baseball stadium. We will stay here again.

Whether you like or dislike this hotel seems to hinge on what each reviewer's particular needs or pet peeves. We just spent one week at the Doubletree Downtown. We were looking for location, cleanliness, comfort, and value. The hotel more than met our needs and expectations. The location is excellent: steps away from the Little Italy entertainment district, close to the trolley stop, a quick walk to the bayfront, and about 7 short blocks to the Gaslamp District. We enjoy walking, and found that we could walk to Balboa Park and the Zoo in about a half hour (North on 1st Street, turn right on Laurel which turns into El Prado, and there you are.)
Our room was bright, large, and spotlessly clean. The staff member that checked us in fulfilled our request to have the best view available (see attached photos). The balcony was really a bonus and we used it frequently. Housekeeping staff were pleasant and responsive. The room was always clean and made up before we returned in the afternoon. The plumbing does make some strange, and sometimes loud, sounds, but we found that if we kept the bathroom door shut, it didn't bother us. Some of the wood furniture is older but not in bad shape. Chairs were new and comfortable. We had a new flat screen tv. The beds and pillows were extremely comfortable. We didn't have any problems with noise although the other rooms around us were occupied.
We didn't find this neighborhood to be creepy, and felt comfortable walking around at night because so many people were out walking or eating at sidewalk cafes. The hotel staff were mostly very outgoing and helpful. The hotel van driver that came for us at the airport was very informative and oriented us to the neighborhood on the way to the hotel. We did not use the parking garage so i cannot comment on that aspect.
We got an excellent rate for our stay and feel that we got a great deal for our money. I definitely would recommend the Doubletree Downtown and will stay here again.

Room tip: Ask for a room with a view of the bay on one of the higher floors

The Doubletree Hotel San Diego Downtown is a very nice facility. My wife and I stayed on September 10 & 11, 2011 to attend the many events taking place in Little Italy and the Art Walk Festival down on the bay. This facility is very clean and the front desk personnel were very accommodating. Our room was very lovely and we had a beautiful view of the city. The bed was very comfortable and we had a peaceful night of rest. The hotel is just a few short blocks to Little Italy with terrific restaurants and gift shops. Its about a 20 minute walk from the hotel to Convention Center area. The walking time gave us a chance to see some of the many beautiful art galleries, restaurants and gift shops in the Gas Lamp District. After reading the other "reviews" of this hotel we would puzzled will all the fuss to park. The parking seemed more than adequate for a mid size vehicle. Although we did notice several large Pick-Up trucks and large vans in the parking stalls that were able to maneuver just fine. The location, accommodations, and cleanliness was perfect for our short stay.

Room tip: The room we stayed was very quiet. It appeared that the room had been recently renovated and was very nice and clean. It appeared that all the rooms have a great view of the area and have balconies which is always a plus.

Stayed at the Doubletree Hotel in San Diego near LIttle Italy. The parking is 22.00 a night, but you can stay at one of the lots nearby cheaper ,and you can't go into the garage with a suburban or Tahoe vehicle. Too Narrow a garage. The hotel itself is nothing special. Did not receive the hot cookies they're suppose to be famous for. The pool on the roof is o.k. just for wading, maximum dept is 4ft. (thats good). The breakfast buffet in the morning is 15.00 a person, not worth it at all. Across the street is a coffee shop with bagels and donuts, etc..
3 blocks away is "little Italy" if you want to eat dinner at the numerous italian restaurants. Also, 4 blocks away is the harbor for more restaurants and walking sites. Its about a 8 block walk to Horton Plaza downtown. So basically you can walk to everything even Petco
Park 1 mile away. The zoo is about 2 miles away. The room was good, flat 28 in. flatscreen, small balcony with nice view of the harbor. Will try someplace new next time,
just nothing special enough to bring me back to this place. Especially the parking situation, way , way too tight.

Room tip: ask for a room facing downtown with a view of the harbor.
