We just returned from a couples' getaway to the Richmond Hill Inn. I had some reservations about visiting this inn after reading some of the 2009-2010 reviews. However, please let me assure you, in 2011 this is a LOVELY place to stay. To understand the other negative reviews, here is some background on this hotel:
The previous owner purchased this property in 2005 and defaulted on the seller financed mortgage in 2008. Three days after a 2009 foreclosure filing, the historic main building "mysteriously" burned to the ground. The previous owner then continued to operate in bankruptcy. The terrible reviews you read are from this time period.
We stayed in the Garden Pavilion, which was lovely, immaculately clean, well appointed, and the service and breakfast were excellent. The room was large and very comfortable. The remnants of the burned building are barely visible unless you go looking for it, and the cottages which overlook the former mansion are currently closed. There is no restaurant, but the pavilion dining area is used for breakfast (delicious, fresh fruit and yogurt parfait with a wonderful fresh ham and cheese quiche) and afternoon tea.
This is not the resort for you if you are looking for activities and entertainment, lots of other people, or a flat screen TV. However, if you are looking for a beautiful, clean, peaceful and relaxing inn for some romantic couple time or personal reflection, you will not be disappointed. The Richmond Hill Inn will make you feel like you are living in your own private garden estate.
