“Smokin' Deal & Great Staff!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2008

We booked over the phone after reviewing the local hotels through tripadvisor. We called and Florence took care of us. We flew our plane to Los Alamos with our two Jack Russell Terriers and stayed for three nights; Florence met us there on her day off and made sure we were happy and comfortable - even placed a gift of peanuts and candy bars in our room! The bar was lively and the locals advised us on the best New Mexican cuisine around. We were going to go out for breakfast, but the complimentary breakfast was nice - green chili for the eggs and bacon - we never bothered eating breakfast out. The hotel is a great value, and a really interesting structure. If you demand all fresh paint and new carpet - stay somewhere else and pay a lot more. If you want great value, friendly and helpful staff, and a great place for a night cap after a day's hiking and sight seeing, then Hilltop is for you. Florence is great!

We were happy - the dogs were happy - the bed was good, the shower hot, and the TV with HBO was nice to veg to. Would stay again in an instant!

“Highly recommend this motel!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2008

Room was comfortable and very clean. Weather was snowy, cold and windy when we arrived. Surely did appreciate the hallways which give one access to the room without exposing the room to the elements. In very bad weather, one can easily enter from the west or the east side of the motel. The complimentary breakfast buffet was outstanding. We stayed two days and ate there both mornings and one dinner meal. Dinner prices were reasonable and the food was quite good. The motel staff was friendly. They will accept pets for a small fee. I recommend this motel and will stay there again.

“Los Alamos needs a better hotel!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2007

I grew up in Los Alamos, and returned to re-visit my childhood; sort of a pilgrimage, you might say. This hotel didn't even exist back in the early seventies; the location was the home of a gas station and auto repair shop. Maybe it should have remained that way.

Checking in was no problem; Florence was exceptionally pleasant and helpful, even offering us a complimentary cocktail. We declined, being non-drinkers.

The room was disappointing. We entered the hallway and discovered it was added as an afterthought; this place was obviously an "exterior entrance" motel originally as the exterior wall was added after the original construction. The only window in the room opened onto this contrived hallway. This means the only ventilation for the room was through the air-conditioner that vented into that hallway. The room smelled terribly old and musty, but got better after we cranked up the A/C and "opened" the window. Otherwise, the room was comfortable with no further complaints.

Breakfast was better than previous reviewers suggested. Maybe we got there on a good day. It's buffet service, and while the milk pitchers were sitting out, their contents were cold and fresh. We must be in New Mexico; green chiles were present to spice up your scrambled eggs! I'm home again!

The old Los Alamos Inn (later the Quality Inn and now independent) is still there, once the best hotel on the hill but now in terrible shape judging by other reviews. This town desperately needs a decent hotel!

  • Liked — It's the least objectionable of a poor selection of hotels
  • Disliked — Tear it down and start over...there's no way to fix this thing in its present form.

“Dissapointed!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2007

We stayed at the Hilltop because it looked so nice on their webpage. What a disappointment! It is essentially an old building that has been dressed up to make people think it is a higher class hotel. First of all, we didn't get the free drink coupons they promised because their bartender decided to quit so they just simply closed down their bar. Never got an apology from them. Secondly, you have to walk down enclosed hallways to get to your room with each room's air conditioner exhaust being vented into the hallway making this environment very warm. Thirdly, the toilet was broken in our room and we had to get a hotel representative to look at it. In their defense, they reponded quickly and when they decided it could not be fixed, they upgraded us to a larger room on another floor late in the evening. Fourthly, the breakfast was very disappointing. Yogurt was not kept on ice nor was the milk kept cool. What scraps were left were not very appetizing to us so we decdied to go into the center of town to eat a decent meal. Now on the positive side, the room (rooms in our case) were very clean with modern upgrades such as refrigerators, free internet connectivity and large television sets with a decent lineup of programming. The bed was very comfortable and we slept very well that night. The airconditioners were somewhat noisy but worked well. Of course, the most positve feature with this hotel is that is centrally located and you can walk to almost anywhere in the downtown area. Overall experience: Fair to OK, but we will probably not stay here again unless we cannot find decent accomodations elsewhere.

“Reservation?! What's a reservation?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2007

Two weeks in advance, we booked (i.e. directly with the hotel, guaranteed on a valid credit card, confirmation number) a suite with two separate sleeping areas, separable by a door, because that's what we needed. We even specified the room number of the suite we had the year before, and were told that we could have the similar suite one flight down. Upon arrival, early evening on the reserved date, we were informed that the only remaining room in the hotel was a "junior suite"(?), as far as I could tell a single standard room with a queen size bed and a little extra space for a dining table. Another hour of research and phone calls on our part and we found suitable accommodations 20 miles away; 20 miles away from that evening's dinner plans and the activities planned near Los Alamos for the next morning. People who travel a great deal more than I do may find this typical and deem it unworthy of serious complaint, but I can say happily that I have only experienced such a problem at this hotel (it was their foul-up on a reservation for two separate rooms the year before that clued us in on the suite alternative to begin with), and I didn't experience any such problem at any of the other four hotels we booked during this last nine day road trip. Don't waste time booking reservations here. Just show up at the front desk. The results are exactly the same.

  • Liked — I'll never have to waste my time with them ever again.
  • Disliked — They gave my room away to the planless guy who stumbled up to their desk a half hour before I got there.
