“Great Relaxed Wedding Venue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2011

While I'm sure Spring Grove would be a great getaway as a B&B- I also wanted to share my experience with it as a wedding venue this past June.

My now new wife and I ended up choosing Spring Grove as the location for our wedding after a lot of searching in and around our hometowns. We were convinced that this was the place on our first visit, and Emily and Joe were excellent hosts throughout the process, answering questions, requests, and assisting with the arrangements throughout the weekend.

You have use of the entire B&B for the weekend, so we ended up doing our rehearsal dinner as well as the wedding ceremony and reception at Spring Grove- very nice to have everything all in one place. The rooms were great, and allowed us to accomodate some of the immediate family as well, though some guests had to get hotels in Lynchburg. While Spring Grove itself was a fantastic location, it is a little off the beaten path, and ~20-30 minutes to the nearest hotels in Lynchburg.

The only issue our guests ran into was with the location and directions. Even with us telling people explicitly NOT to use GPS or online map sites and to follow the directions, a few decided to ignore that and ended up a ways away and turned around. Certainly not Emily and Joe's fault, but a quick "report a problem" to Google would save some hassle in getting lots of guests to the right place on time. No issue with the several dogs as one poster mentioned, they were all friendly and relaxed, not aggressive at all. Of course, Emily penned them up for a few hours during the wedding.

Overall the weekend and wedding itself went as well as we could have hoped for. The set up outside (grounds, plants, etc.) looked great, and we were able to get guests to the reception while we had plenty of places for pictures around the house and grounds. Spring Grove provided the bartenders and staff for setting up chairs, tables, tents, and so on, and allowed us to bring in our own services for things like photographers, drinks, band/DJ, and catering.

I guess I don't get to do it a second time, but Spring Grove would be an excellent choice!

“I'm glad I found it to stay at...”

We visited for one night in the dogwood cottage recently. It was a great cottage. The only problem we had was with the smell on the first floor. The smell was like a concentrated version of a camp smell - musty and overbearing. We would not stay in the cottage again, but we would definitely stay in the main hotel. What a place. It wasn't clear where to enter. I went to what I thought was the entrance and the door was locked. I tried at another entrance in the middle and the door was locked. I went around to the northern side and five dogs came up to greet me all barking like they were going to chomp on me. I was starting to get worried about the place. Anyway, they didn't bite, but I didn't like the feeling of whether they would bite me or not while walking in to a side entrance that didn't even look like an entrance and trying to figure out how to check-in. I think the entrance/check-in needs some tightening up because our stay was great. They were very nice people, friendly and all. Great breakfast. Lot's of books. Oh and there is no TV in the dogwood cottage, but I knew that going in and it didn't bother me, but if you're addicted to TV the dogwood cottage is definitely not for you. Lot's of books and we were loaned a collection set of the civil war that was excellent for our evening perusal prior to retiring for the night. I definitely recommend this place and agree that you can't follow Google maps or you will end up somewhere, but not near the hotel. We would visit again, but not staying in that dogwood cottage, which by the way has the original floor they said back when it was a one-story building where they stored corn, husks and all to feed the animals on the farm I think they said. Probably why that smell on the first floor although it was fine on the second floor where the bedroom was, which by the way was very nice. So definitely plan to stay here if you are visiting Appomattox! =)

“A little bit of heaven, off the beaten path!”

On a recent trip to Appomattox, we had the great good fortune to discover Spring Grove Farm - Emily & Joe Sayers' marvelous Bed & Breakfast. The facility, which has been lovingly restored and expanded, is world class. The gardens and surrounding countryside, the beautifully appointed rooms, and the bright welcoming breakfast area, made our stay memorable. Our hosts were gracious, knowledgeable, and fun to be around. A Five-star experience.

“Off the Beaten Path but Well Worth Finding”

We've stayed at B&B's around the world but Spring Grove Farm matches up with the best of them. We booked two rooms for a graduation at Longwood University; many others were there for Liberty U's graduation. This B&B boasts the nicest and most helpful hosts (Emily and Joe Sayers) that you could ever imagine...nothing is too much trouble. The B&B is enormous and painstakingly restored...absolutely top-notch accommodations. Large rooms, comfortable beds, steam showers, exquisite linens and towels, etc. My wife and I stayed in the Library Room...a unique (and large) room with a fireplace. My in-laws stayed in the Chrysanthemum Room, which reminded me of a cozy bedroom in my grandmother's house. It's located in an idyllic setting in the countryside...grazing cattle across the way, and beautiful gardens and grounds to the rear. Soooooo quiet...the only noise at night were the peepers. We had seen it (and booked it) in February...believe me, while it was impressive then, it's breathtaking with the gardens in full bloom. The breakfast was as substantial as any we've ever had - waffles, bacon, sausage, yogurt, juices, fruit salad, cereal, and a lot more. This is a hidden gem that should be considered by families of students from Longwood, Liberty, Lynchburg, and Hampden-Sydney...an easy drive on good roads. With the limited selection of quality hotels / motels nearby, Spring Grove Farm provides a great alternative. Perfect for a romantic getaway. Book this outstanding B&B before the word gets out!

“Best host - hands down!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2008

My husband spent a fabulous weekend in early April 2008 to celebrate our 10th anniversary. The innkeepers were absolutely wonderful. We stayed in the cottage. There are no pictures of the cottage on the B&Bs website, but there should be. It's close enough to the house to easily run in for a cookie or extra soda, but far enough to feel completely private. Upon our arrival, we were met by both of the Sayers, who were working their gardens. We also met the four dogs on the premise. The dogs were never a problem and we didn't hear them at night.. Emily gave us the run down and then pointed us in the right direction. The cottage has separate parking and enterance. The cottage looks kind of plain on the outside, but the inside is well appointed. There is a comfy modern couch that opens up to a queen-sizeds bed. There is also a great chair that swivels. The fireplace doesn't hold real fire, but the effect is great nonetheless. We requested a welcome basket, but wanted something modest. The host did just that: wine, cheese, cookies, grapes, candies and a few others snacks. The fridge had cold sodas waiting for us. The coffee area was fully stocked. The hard wood floors and wood work is beautiful. The bedroom is upstairs and is very cozy and is a great use of space. Both upstairs and down open up to a patio and a balcony. There is a jacuzzi tub in the bedroom. Good closet space. The bathrooms are modest, but functional. There is a neat shower downstairs that is very unassuming.

But the main draw is the food. Where to begin? Delicious omlet, bacon, bisquits, jam, butter, fresh fruit, coffee cake, and so much more for the first day. On our second day, we were treated to homemade waffles, bacon, butter, coffee cake, whipped cream, and so much more. All delivered to the cottage at the time we requested. Emily even brought us out a second batch of waffles because she wanted to have them hot and fresh. We were stuffed and relaxed.

The property is gorgeous and we spent a great deal of time walking around and exploring the main house (huge and beautiful). Lots of hills and big green open space. Be warned: the cottages does not have a TV, but does have a modest radio/CD player.

I could go on, but there is one thing that I must mention. There is no real check out time. You tell the host what time you want to check in and you tell the host what time you want to check out. As Emily told me: just check out by 11:59 p.m. How refreshing not to have to rush to check out at 11:00 a.m. or exactly noon after eating such a large breakfast.

We will definitely be back!
