We stayed at the Steinhart for the first time in late Sept/early Oct '11. What a lovely hotel. If you plan on being in San Francisco for a week or more, this is the place to be. I can't think of a negative comment to offer. The neighborhood is friendly (as long as you don't stray south into the Tenderloin and which you're warned not to do on checking in), the hotel is architecturally stunning; the elevator is a wonderful treat; the rooms are huge, comfy, well furnished, and well supplied; the lobby looks totally relaxing (although our room was so great we never spent any time there); and best of all, the people at the front desk are just the nicest folks you'll ever want to meet. You're three (uphill) blocks from the California St cable cars (and three downhill blocks on the way home), five blocks from Powell Street, an easy walk to Union Square, and there are nearby bus lines that will get you where you want to go and that run frequently. There is no daily housekeeping service (no big surprise if you read anything about the hotel before you book) but there is a dishwasher in the kitchen (or at least in ours), a laundry room in the basement, and a laundromat next door. You have a full kitchen, a dining room, and plenty of space to relax after a day of work or sightseeing. This being San Francisco, there was plenty of street noise at night, but nothing compared to the hotels we've stayed in closer to Union Square.By far the nicest hotel in which I've had the pleasure to stay.
