We spent two weeks along Americas West coast this month, spending the majority of our time in Vegas, then passing through LA and San Francisco for a change of scene. We ate amazingly well in Vegas, but then you're so spoilt for choice, its no surprise you end up eating some of your best meals there. However, an eagerly anticipated dinner in San Francisco at Gary Danko, turned into one of the very best dining experiences that i can remember for a long time. It is said to be San Fran's most popular restaurant so we had booked well in advance and now i understand why. The welcome we received was exemplary as was the real expertise shown by the waiting staff when explaining the menu. We opted for 3 courses in amongst this hugely-filled menu - I practically got the waitress to select my 3 plated of food based on what she thought were the best items as it was too difficult to choose myself. In fact, the service from the start of the meal right to the very end was superb - we never felt rushed, nor were we ever waiting too long for the food or for our waters to be topped up. for the food, i started off with delicately cooked Lobster with wild mushrooms, potato puree, and Tarragon. I never thought Lobster could be so soft and tender - it went down rather quickly and i was even mopping up the remaining sauce with bread. 2nd course was stuffed Quail with Peas and Artichokes - this was honestly one of the best main courses i've enjoyed eating in any restaurant. Flavours were intense, Quail was wonderfully tender, Peas vibrant - all in all, a really generous, accurately cooked plate of food that looked fantastic on the plate. I was rather full towards the end of this course but managed to get through a delicious Cheesecake with all sorts of accompaniments - the perfect way to end off the meal. Actually, the PERFECT ending to the dinner was the going-away present we received before leaving the restaurant in the form of individual pineapple cakes, beautifully wrapped in gold paper. If ever i return to San Francisco, I know where i'm heading for dinner again! Wonderful!
