We had the most wonderful stay in August, 2010! (I meant to write this earlier...It was not an option to select below so I wanted to note it.) Traveling with my husband and 2 daughters (ages 10 and 81/2 at the time) we shared a king room with a pull out sofa bed. The room was clean, large and very cheery. It was on the back side of the hotel overlooking the green area and terrace. The sofa bed was a bit small for 2 girls (really an oversize twin) which we were told before booking, but thought we'd try anyway. It worked out perfectly for us since my younger one just hopped in the big bed with my husband and I. The king bed was so big, we didn't even notice her there! The room also had a lovely gas fireplace and little kitchen nook with a mini fridge. The large closet and dresser held all of our clothes.
The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. Every afternoon there were fresh baked cookies in the lobby. What a wonderful welcome after a long flight from the east coast! The girls liked the chocolate chips best and they even delivered a special bag to our room on the third day just for them! The teddy bear that came with the room was so adorable, we wanted another one and they were able to get one for us - we paid, of course, but the girls still have them as a wonderful keepsake! Even though we were there in August (late) we never missed air conditioning. We cracked the window for some fresh air in the late afternoon, but closed up before leaving for dinner as it would get cold!
Centrally located, we could walk to Chinatown, Union Square and Nob Hill. Also, we were within a few blocks of several cable car lines so it was easy to get around to all we wanted to do. There was some construction across the street, but we heard nothing being on the back side of the building.
Breakfast was served every morning in the lovely breakfast room. There were hot and cold items including eggs, toast, pastries, cereal (hot and cold), fruit and, of course, coffee and tea and fruit juices. The girls loved the hot chocolate, too. The hot food changed every day (eggs/bacon one day, quiche the next and so on). A wonderful full meal to begin a day of sightseeing. The complimentary drinks in the room mini bar were great to take with us for a day on the town.
I've saved the BEST for last. Every afternoon (late, around 4:30 - 5) down in the very comfortable and cozy sitting room/library, they served delicious hors d'oeuvres (cheese and crackers, dip and chips, fruit, olives) and wine, both red and white, all complimentary!! We made a point of going down every evening before heading out to dinner. It was a wonderful way to start our evening and a great way to meet other guests staying there. We met quite a few interesting people and shared our adventures from the day as well as tips and suggestions.
This is a gem of a hotel! I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a home away from home in SF. We hope to go back one day soon and will definitely stay here again.
