We stayed in San Francisco for 3 days to see the sights and made a last minute booking with Hotel Rex because of it's low price and surprisingly high ratings. We weren't disappointed and neither will you be if you stay here. The hotel itself is small, not boutique small but it's definitely not high volume. The rooms are very neat, well presented with an interesting literature based theme. The hotel is also quite green focused (as is the way in San Francisco), however I was pleased that the 'green' options were that, optional and I did not feel pressured by any means. Hotel Rex provides you with the usual amenities such as cable & a mini bar and we were encouraged by staff to use the mini bar for what ever we needed and to just remove any mini bar items we needed to.

What set them apart for me was one particular night of my stay.
I had to make arrangements for my girlfriend and my 7 year anniversary dinner. Both the bellman and the concierge helped me greatly going through a number of options for me as well as providing me a reservation at a fantastic nearby restaurant, Palominos. With a great seat along with a wonderful walk along the pier I owe all the boyfriend points I earned to the staff at Hotel Rex.
As we arrived home after a fantasic dinner and walk we were greeted with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries! I have never reviewed any other hotels I've stayed at before but I felt obligated to spread the word about this wonderful hotel.

Stay and you won't be disappointed

I was in San Francisco in November 2011 and we chose Rex mainly due to the reviews on tripadvisor and its central location. The hotel is right in a not so loud part of the center on the foot of Nob Hill, minutes from Union Square and next to the cable lines. So public transport is not needed for visiting most of the sites with the only exception being the Mission, Haight Ashbury, Castro, Alamo Square and Golden Gate Park. With regards to the hotel itself, rooms are very nice and pretty, and quite spacious for a SF central hotel, even though a bit small by american standards. Staff is excellent, always helpful and very knowledgeable. The public spaces are quite intimate and small enough to feel at home. On the down side, prices do remind you the fees you would pay in London or Barcelona for an equivalent hotel and also the crowds may be considered a bit pretencious by some. But all in all a very good stay and a great match for a dreamland city like SF.

Just spent 2 nights there. Great, central location within easy walking distance to excellent shopping, Chinatown, the piers, etc. They really take advantage of the age of the hotel with a cozy "library" feel in the reception and dining/lounge areas. People of all ages and pairings quietly enjoyed the cloistered early evening wine offering. My room was small, but very well appointed and comfortable. Others have commented on the total commitment of the staff to meeting the needs of all guests with a true sense of sincereity. That I found to be true from check-in to a 4:00am checkout. I look forward to returning there with my wife.

This is a different hotel to most chain styles. It has its own unique and quirky style but certainly doesn't lack sophistication. The rooms are generous and welcoming.
The staff are the drawcard for all the Joie de Vivre Hotels and the Hotel Rex staff are no exception.
They greeted us warmly and gave us touring suggestions that were appropriate for a family with two boys aged 11 and 13yrs. Their suggestions were not typical but certainly gave us a better insight into lifeand history of San Francisco. Its location is central and the nearby shopping is fantastic. This was my first time to San Fran and we sadly only had three nights here. We would highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again..
