“Not ready for business travelers”

Contrary to its web site promises, the hotel is not opulent nor does it provide superior service. I stayed in two different rooms during my 2 week business trip to Pago Pago. Both times, my rooms were infested with small roaches. Since this was a business trip, I needed to have internet service but was unable to get online in my hotel room because of bad cables. There was intermittent wi-fi in the hotel lobby and the business office only had one computer with internet for all its guests. I expected much more for the $140 government rate that I paid.

“Luxury is a Relative Term”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2010

I read in some travel publication (I think Lonely Planet) that this was American Samoa's high-end hotel--and in a sense this is true. Just suspend every expectation you have of what comes to mind when you hear the term "high-end" and open your mind to a separate reality. What would pass for "somewhat adequate" in Honolulu or Los Angeles is the best thing going in American Samoa.

Cons: It's far from the beach
You need a car to get anywhere
Rooms were dimly lit
Towels and sheets were of indeterminate age and somewhat threadbare
Restaurant was out of certain foods
Room rates not commensurate with quality (expensive)

Pros: Staff was friendly and helpful
One could get a massage at the spa
Rooms were reasonably clean
No bugs in sight
Restaurant was good with what food they had
Plenty of free parking
Close to the airport

Keep in mind that the only thing American about American Samoa is the name and the fact that they use US currency. Mexico is more developed than AS.

Bottom line: The staff is friendly, the restaurant is good, the food won't leave you incapacitated in the bathroom, there's free (and good) internet access, and the rooms are clean enough. It ain't the Ritz, but for American Samoa, this is as good as it gets.

“Hotel has gone down hill in the past 3 years....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2010

I stayed at this hotel in 2007 and again July 2010. What a huge difference 3 years has made. Some rooms had cock roaches, cobb webs, the air conditioners were broke and maintenance could not fix them, dirty bathrooms, no pressure from the shower head, shower doors leak all over the floor, rooms smell moldy and musty, carpet is ruined. The staff are very friendly, but what a huge difference in 3 years. The massage therapists were wonderful! I highly recommend them. Being it's really the only hotel on the island you don't have a lot to choose from. Management should work with what they have and try and keep up such a beautiful building and maintain customer satisfaction.

“Not as pretty as advertised”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2010

Arrived late at night with a very warm welcome. Very accomodating people. Pool is nice but sometimes crowded. Pool furniture is rotting and falling apart, and wind blows much of it around the yard. The rooms are comfortable with wired internet and that is sometimes flakey. There is only one wireless carrier on the island and that is Bluesky. Don't expect your Verizon phones to work here, as I have a Blackberry and a Droid neither get signal. only 11 channels on tv so plan on doing something other than watching tv. Great place to lay your head at night, just kinda out of the way of everything on the island.

“Hana Hou: Pacific-Hawaii”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2009

these folks worked their tails off to make the guys feel welcomed. Due to guest volume, the group had to share rooms; cots and roll-outs are better than sofas. ;o)
