“Divine Sunset Spot”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

OK, so most of the Waianae area is economically depressed and it shows. For some reason these two monstrous condos were built right on beautiful Papaoneone Beach. They are a bit of an abomination, but if you are lucky enough to stay there you will see why they are popular: Gorgeous beach and lovely LahiLahi Point. The guests/residents are more likely to be hawaiian than elsewhere we visited on Oahu. I enjoyed watching the local keiki (children) enjoy the surf. From the littlest ones just learning how to manage the breakers, to the pre-teens body surfing, and the teens expertly boogie-boarding. The surf was strong when we visited and I would be nervous if I had small children on that steep beach. I grew up in San Diego so I have ocean-swimming experience, so I loved it but was knocked down a few times by the powerful surf. We hiked to the top of the point for great views. Our ground floor unit was convenient for beach action, but some items went missing from our lanai. Many of the units were vacant and so the place was pretty quiet except for the sound of the ocean... well, there were frequent sirens in the night. Our unit could have been cleaner, but that varies unit to unit since they are independently owned/operated. The best part of all is the sunset views!

“#901 - Awesome Place to Getaway!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

The Beach Cabanas were easy to find, Right off the Farrington Hwy. You need a Fob to enter the gates and to get into the elevator. They Have a security guards there - that are very polite, helpful and friendly (especially the security guard that was there to help us upon our arrival- Frank. Everyone who works there are all very nice) When we came home later on in the night I always see them walking around, checking the areas and what not. I felt safe with them - more so then regular hotel security, we even kept our Jeep roof down overnight and it was totally fine.

My bf and I stayed in Condo #901.
The room is almost like a bachelor pad with the bathroom and the kitchen in the middle - separating the living room and bedroom.
The kitchen was well equipped with utilities (toaster, blender, rice cooker) and utensils. The Balcony was a fantastic place for having meals, while looking over the beach that the Cabanas were located on. The bathroom was nice - Blow dryer, soap.
For the nights that you want to sit back and watch some TV - the selection was pretty good! Several good movie channels. :) - I saw a manual that there was a DVD player (however we did exactly see where it was- nor need it)
The room was also equipped with extra towels, bed sheets, blankets and pillows. They also had boards, beach chairs and umbrellas in the closet - we used the chairs, which were nice to sit on the beach with.
Overall the room was almost exactly how we would have wanted our own vacation home to be. - Its comfy and a lovely place to stay.

The Beach that the condos are located on is absolutely beautiful. The Beach was not busy what so ever :) and the water was gorgeous! People were snorkelling and we went swimming in the water. We actually saw several sea turtles! It was Awesome!
The Cabanas have a gate that lets you access the beach, a place to rinse off and a BBQ area.

As for Groceries: The "Tamura's Market" had great prices on things however their meat selection I would probably suggest on buying somewhere else - Unless the day that we were there they weren't the freshest looking. But everything else had a great price compared to most places we tired. We bought most of our Veggies and Fruit at the local farm markets or Chinatown. I have to mention that my two fav places to get food (in the area) is Sun Sushi and Barbecue Kai (Looks a bit "Shady" on the outside - but delicious food and great prices.)

The area is around a lot of locals and its not busy and touristy - Which gives you that true laid back, relaxing Hawaiian feel. The area is a bit of a drive from everything BUT! its a great Scenic Drive/cruise.

Compared to staying in Waikiki Last year, I would have to say staying in the Beach Cabanas with my BF... was the best choice. It was a great vacation.

Room Tip: Room #901 is newly updated and I would totally recommend and return.

“Great sunny beach - not very good location if you plan to move around the island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

Hi, me & my wife have been there during 5 days. Unit 309. I don't know if all the units are in good conditions, because Makaha Beach is a condo where people actually live, it is not a resort. Our unit was very clean and pretty. Every unit has its own lanai with great ocean views.
The sunsets are incredible. The sound of the waves at night makes for a great sleep. The sea is incredibly clear and light blue, fantastic early in the morning. The swell grows in the afternoon, but it never gets too bad. If you plan to stay at the same spot during your stay, and you have a family and want to eat at home to save some money, this is definitely your spot. If you plan to see all the island, using the condo as a base, you could maybe find some better place. This is because Makaha, which is in Waianae, is nearly at the end of a road to nowhere, which also happens to be the road where thousands of natives have their homes. This means that you'll find a lot of traffic. This has nothing to do with danger, as someone (including an hostess from Hawaiian Airlines) has warned us. "Uh, Makaha, so dangerous, native people live in the barracks & in the bushes, they're rude, they steal things, be careful!". We found local people absolutely peaceful and not interested in bothering us. They're just normal people with normal lives, and maybe if your standard is traveling in Resorts, or living in the Ritz-Carlton, as may be for an hostess, it could be scary. But for normal people, is a normal place. The only negative, as I told, is the heavy car traffic at any time of the day. And you'll have to go all the way out to anywhere else on the island, and all the way in, back to the condo. So keep that in mind when you decide.
The condo has its own private parking and security at the entrance 24/7.

“fantastic location with great snorkelling opportunities”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

These cabanas are individually owned and are located on the beach front within a secure gated complex. We rented appartment 812a through the website HomeAway under the heading 'luxurious beachfront condo' and we were not disappointed! The agent Debi was excellent throughout all stages of the booking and even provided a welcome pack which we thought was a lovely gesture.

The secluded beachfront location ensured that no time was wasted fighting through crowds or parking to secure a good spot on the beach. We brought our own snorkelling equipment and this meant we were snorkelling over coral reef within 1 min of our front door! There was an abundance of reef fish and eels, we even saw octopus and lobster and swam with sea turtles. As a first time snorkeller we would recommend investing in dry top snorkells as we did - thus ensuring no unwelcomed mouthfulls of sea water!

The condo had everything we needed, including a very useful folder full of local information and maps. As mentioned in previous reviews a car is a must and also a great way of exploring the island. We can recommend visiting the North Shore (approx 1 hour drive). Be sure to stop at Macky's shrimp truck on the way for truly amazing food. We would also recommend making time for a stop at the Macadamia nut tour on the east side of the island (approx 1.5 hour drive), very entertaining and worth the $20 fee each.

We did not visit Honolulu or Waikiki but it would only be about 30min drive to get there.

Well worth the trip, would have no hesitation in recommending to couples, families or friends.
