We have stayed at the Hale Kamaole three times and love it there. Its excellent location offers easy access to the beach, stores and restaurants. It is also only a short drive to the beaches and golf in Wailea. Easy access to the Piilani Highway allows quick access to other parts of the island.
We love the comfortable atmosphere at this resort - geared to families. Go at Xmas and you will find large family groups occupying 2 or 3 units. We traveled at the beginning of December and the resort was very peaceful - as the holidays drew nearer occupancy picked up and more kids appeared. Some of the residents own their units and are there for extended periods of time.
There are two building groupings at this resort (the upper and lower). Each area has its own pool and set of bbqs (4 at each). I love that they have kept charcoal bbqs here - it creates an opportunity for a social hour every evening as everyone takes their drink down to the bbq, exchanging stories of their day's adventures while waiting for their coals to light. After all, isn't that why you're there...to relax and do something that you don't normally do at home?
Be aware that this resort was built in the 70s and while some of the units have been updated, some haven't. This shouldn't detract from your vacation, however. Just don't go expecting to stay in a 5 star resort.
The kitchens are generally very well appointed and most units have a storage room where there may be all kinds of treasures waiting. Previous occupants may have left beach chairs, boogie boards or snorkeling equipment behind for your use.
The grounds are extremely well kept - there is always someone trimming the luxuriant foliage or cleaning the pool and bbqs. The workers are unobtrusive as much of the work is done before you are even out of bed.
My favorite part of the day is watching and listening to the conch band salute the sun at sunset. If you have a conch shell in your unit, feel free to participate!
I will never stay anywhere else in Maui!
