“Not bad if you're on a budget...”

One of the cheapest room rates on Maui, but if you need cheap lodging to make your Maui trip this place will do. The rooms have not been updated since LBJ was President, but the place was clean. For those that don't spend a lot of time in their room (and who does on Maui), this place will do fine...

“Close to beach, not to shops...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

The Aston Maui Lu was a good resort with good facilities but it was just a bit far from places to eat & shop if you haven't got a car.
The staff were very friendly and helpful on arrival and throughout our stay and the conceierge desk was good who organised for us to see the Luau and also suggested several good palces to visit and how to get around (as we didn't have a car).
The rooms at the Maui Lu like many other resorts are a little dated and tired looking. They look like they are from the 80's and in some cases a bit of maintenance was needed to walls, doors etc. where it was clear there was some unrepaired damage. In saying that though the rooms were kept very clean and were comfortable.
The reosrt itself was great with a very nice pool and plenty of facilities including FREE Wi Fi and other internet access computers, vending machines for snacks & drinks as well as a lounge area to store our bags on check out and relax whilst waiting for a taxi. The gardens were immaculate and very well maintained.
As I mentioned this is very close to the beach, from our room it was about a 2 minute walk across the road to the Kihei Beach. The downside was the shops and eating places were about a 20 minute walk which meant each time you had to allow for that or consider a taxi. Once in Kihei though there was plenty of places including fast food, cafes and some restaurants. There is also a supermarket, drug store and plenty of other stores. Buses do run along the main road past the resort but are only every hour so you need to time it right (concierge had timetables). Buses are cheap at $2 for an all day unlimited ticket.
Overall we had a good time at the Aston Maui Lu and would recommend this place but whilst on Maui I recommend hiring a car.

Room Tip: You don't need ocean front to enjoy the experience of Kihei

“Just OK”

My husand and I stayed here on January 11, 2012 for one night. I was a bit nervous about it because of the reviews on this site, however we thought we would give it a try.

The resort is really spread out. We checked in at night and had to find our way across the street where the ocean front rooms were. We missed the turn because there was no signage. When we checked out in the morning, we noticed abandoned buildings on the property, which wasnt very nice to look at.

The room was just okay. I am glad we got the ocean front room because it was nice waking up and looking out on the water. We were on the 2nd floor and the walk leading up to the room wasnt very appealing. The air conditioners were old and leaking and needed a good clean and fix. Inside the room, the ceilings were nice and high. The furniture needed some refinishing and the carpets could use some washing to rid them of the musty smell. Everything else in the room was just okay, nothing special.

If you are used to staying in cheaper motels, then this room would be okay. If you are expecting something really nice, this isnt it. It isnt terrible or anything,Ask it's just okay.

One annoyance I had was that they charged me for one night and a deposit of one night so I got a $400 charge before even getting there. When I checked out, they gave me the deposit back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is more recently renovated. Apparently some are, which would improve the whole e...

“You get what you pay for!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

I'm not a fuzzy traveller and enjoy a 'bargain' on rooms and attractions, therefore the Aston Maui Lu Resort fulfilled my needs to put my head down on a (clean) pillow. It's a bit far from most shopping malls and hang-outs in Kihei, but you might need a car anyway to get around. Room was clean, not shabby but certainly ready for a renovation. Pool was clean and inviting. If you have a slim budget that's a hotel to stay in.

“Worst hotel on Maui”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

I may be exaggerating on the title because I haven't stayed at EVERY hotel on Maui, but as a frequent visitor this has been the worst of over a dozen. Certainly, this is the worst hotel in Kihei. The staff refused to give me a military rate despite being on active duty orders to attend a conference -- how patriotic. There are NO amenities here (despite the $10/day charge) and the continental breakfast requires a presentation on local businesses (like a time-share presentation payed for by the businesses I'm sure). The room was filthy (not just dirty). I would avoid this hotel like the plague (which you might catch if you stay there).

Aloha

As a Viet Nam Vet, I appreciate you and all military men and women. The date that you were here fell right into a high occupancy period when there were no discounted rates available to anyone. The hotel was almost full with rooms at a premium. We respect your opinions and your feedback is appreciated. More than 32,000 room nights were sold in 2011 at the Maui Lu. The property is the oldest property in Kihei built in the 60's before you were born. The people that return year after year have different expectations. They enjoy the beautiful Hawaiian grounds, the old swimming pool and Luau right on property. The continental breakfast is offered by the Activity desk and they do not require anything from anyone to listen to their presentation or enjoy the breakfast. Timeshares are not part of their presentation, but if you want to learn about timeshares, the Activities Desk people can assist you.

Thank you for serving our country. My boss is an ex-Navy Seal.
