Surf Song is a great little place right near the ocean in Poipu. We were very pleasantly surprised to find the place clean and tidy, as well as asethically pleasing on the outside. We stayed in Unit #1 on the ground floor and really had few negative things to say about it. It was small but was of sufficient size to sleep, shower and get ready for the next adventure. We were so busy in Kauai that we spent little time in the room. The backyard of this place is beautiful with black lava-type rocks, lush tropical plants and trees, a grill and several lawn chairs. You can't see the ocean from these condos but you can clearly hear it while you sleep which is awesome! There were a few bugs that got in the room but it is likely due to us keeping the windows open to get a nice breeze. There is no air-conditioning but you really don't need it with the great breeze from the ocean. Overall a very strong recommendation from us and we would definitely stay there again. Affordable and a great location!

Yes, you're in a posh neighborhood in Poipu beach. Yes, you can hear the surf and are just across the street from the beach.
However, we had big problems that resulted in our leaving a day early. We had problems checking in (the lock box code we were given was incorrect) and it took us 6 hours to contact the owners. Even then the second code they gave us was incorrect and we had to use the master lock box in the back.
Worse, however was what I'll call the insect/screen problem. There were screens, but they were not sealed properly, as we soon learned. Also, the screens were absolutely filthy, probably had never ever been cleaned, with clumps of moist dust and dead insects. The baseboards were coated in moist dust clumps and more dead insects, mostly thousands of gnats. While the bathroom seemed clean upon check-in, overnight the sink accumulated hundreds of dead gnats. I have no idea why. In the morning I went to take a shower and the bathtub, too, was coated in dead gnats. It was so disgusting that I broke down and cried.
I found dead gnats in my suitcase for days afterward.

The rest of the place was clean - the sheets, carpet, etc. The owners have some work to do with very thorough "spring cleaning" and get some screens that work.

We checked into the Sheraton, foregoing the second night we'd already paid for at Surf Song.

If this place were thoroughly cleaned (not just a daily cleaning, but a 2 day major clean-up), it might become a true "find".
