“Amazing location, great privacy, slightly dated”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Title says it all. It truly is an amazing location. We had a "premium oceanfront" villa, which had one of the best views I've ever seen in my life. That said, the Ocean View properties were also rather nice and at most 200 yards from the beach.

Definitely do: visit all the north shore beaches if you can: Ke'e, Tunnels, Anini. Go to Kalypso in Hanalei. Drink off the amazing wine selection at the Mediterranean Gourmet Restaurant next to Hanalei Colony Resort. Go boogie boarding here: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=kauai&hl=en&ll=22.09919,-159.30422&spn=0.002977,0.004823&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=41.546728,79.013672&hnear=Kauai&t=h&z=18

Don't: Waste your money on the wednesday Luau at the Mediterranean Gourmet Restaurant. Or if you do go, only show up for the last 60 minute when the Tahitian theme kicks in. Otherwise you'll need to drink coffee to stay awake!

Food: buy at big save in Hanalei and cook at your room or dine out at Kalypso for local surfer dive bar flavor. Avoid Bar Acuda. Overpriced and not worth it.

Things to know: Rooms are very huge but are somewhat dated. Good for all ages from honeymooners to seasoned citizens. Fires are OK on the beach!!! With a northern wind, the beach can be unusable. It's about 60' from LIH. Ke'e beach has some of the most amazing stargazing on this planet. Rent a convertible and hang out there at night.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for an upstairs room. If they have it they'll set you up. A/C is 100% not need...

“My favourite place in Hawaii, and a hotel to match”

I just loved this hotel. I must have looked at every option (even camper vans) for our Christmas stay in Hanalei, but everything was full. I'd been put off this place a bit by reviews saying that the place was remote and that some of the condos weren't great. Yes, it is out of Hanalei, and I can easily see the appeal of staying in that lovely town. But the route to the hotel was via spectacular beaches and ocean, and I loved it every time we rode into town. And then there was the condo itself, overlooking the back of the hotel and the fish pond and tiki lights. What a gorgeous condo. Full of tasteful Hawaiian style furnishings and immaculately clean. I could have spent a week here; make it a month. I hope to make it back there someday, fingers crossed.

“A view that can't be beat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We must have had the best room in the place because the view was nothing short of stunning. We had a panoramic view of the beach and ocean through the balcony, living room and bedroom windows...like being on ship. Truly unbelievable. I could sit anywhere in the condo and just enjoy the view. In fact, I woke up every morning and simply stared out the window at the sunrise, without moving a muscle. I loved listening to the sounds of the sea instead of someone else's air conditioner. We also went out every evening and looked at the stars....so many of them, I've never seen anything like it. If you are looking for privacy, relaxation and a view like none other, this is your place. If you want to spend some time in the Poipu area, pick a hotel there for a few days, then come to Hanalei.

The condo itself was very serviceable, though certainly not plush. It isn't meant to be. It's a comfortable, kick your shoes off kind of place. The kitchen is small but functional, and one bathrom shower was so tiny even I had a hard time in it (5'4", 110 lbs). It is a good distance away from the town of Priceville, and that was a tad tiresome if you wanted to go into town to eat dinner. The drive back on a winding, under-construction road was a bummer. We all liked eating at the Mediterranean Gourmet next door, and it was easy to get coffee and a bagel at the small gift/coffee shop in the morning, so you don't necessarily have to drive into Princeville that often anyway. The thing I probably liked the least was the soft sandy beach...impossible to walk on, although we tried many times. You sink in up to your ankles, which makes some very tough going.

Hanalei Colony Resort is casual, unpretentious, friendly (even the cats!) and totally in touch with the natural beauty that makes Kauai so special. I would not stay anywhere else.

“Nice resort, but remote”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

Overall a very nice resort. As others have stated, it is remote and the beach is not good for swimming, at least it wasn't at the time of year we were there (Jan). It is an hour drive pretty much anywhere you want to go. Spa beach massage experience was very good, as is the restaurant. No TVs as was mentioned. We stayed in K1, 10 feet to the beach. The waves crashing takes a bit of getting used to and you can't really shut the sound out, but after the first night, it is soothing. My only real complaint is the pool. It was extremely cold. Every morning the staff were putting more water in which was likely well sourced and very very cold. Our two bedroom unit had two baths which was nice and a very well stocked kitchen with cooking supplies.

Room Tip: K1 was awesome, ground floor, ocean

“Quiet, remote, you can't swim at their beach”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

Lovely property, very simple and relaxing. You hear the roar of a very active surf constantly. But this is quite isolated. You're in the car 16 minutes to get to Princeville to buy groceries. Much more driving if you want good restaurants (try Poipu for that). It's a full 1.5 hours in no traffic condtions to get to the south. This is also the NORTH of the island, given to protracted rain and cool temps. I haven't been HOT yet in Kauai, and i was sort of looking forward to that. Didn't put on my swim suit the whole time. No phones, no TV, but they do have wireless internet so with an ipad you don't need the rest. Would try to get a second floor condo for better views.
There is a laughably small and dark swimming pool and a hot tub, whole area in desperate need of renovation

Room Tip: Be sure to get a room facing the ocean and on the second floor.
