“Great but not luxurious”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

If you like your hostel to have a lot of character then this is the place for you. Everything is built by hand out of local materials. There's a lot of space to put up tents. All the power is off grid (wind and solar). It's really close to the beach and the geothermal ponds. There's plenty of fruit and coconuts to eat, too. Being close to the coast means its sunny a lot too. If you don't mind roughing it a little this is a great place, but don't expect it to be luxurious.

“awful, avoid at all costs! (from an experienced traveler)”

This is not even a little bit what is advertised. We agreed for a bus station pickup which happened 1.5 hours late. When Eddie finally showed up he stopped at Subway, bought a sandwich, ate the whole thing without saying a word while sitting in the parking lot, went to home depot and shopped with no prior warning, tried to sell us headlamps he'd just bought, then was about to go grocery shopping when we intervened (at 930 pm). he finally took us back to a glorified squatters camp with no one else anywhere near us (except for the lava flow which was very cool, and an old nudist farmed neighbor who we met the next morning) and expected $25 for the ride and $30 for camping. ha! we got out asap the next morning. he is a dishonest money hungry bum. we also heard later from local sources that police have been out to his properties multiple times and have tried to shut him down. you can do much better in pahoa.

“The campsite is dirty and ramshackle”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2009

We didn't see the hostel, but the campsite does not resemble their website at all. The kitchen is disgusting, shower outside with no privacy and the toilet is a health hazard. Don't pay money to stay here- the state parks must be a better bet than this.

“this place is great now”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2006

I don't know how this place was when Mark Caudill was there but now it is a real deal and nice. It is close to the beach and the hotpond of Ahalanui. We had bicycles, boogie boards, and snorkeling gear to use for free. We had a clean, new tent under a metal roof building on a platform. Sheets and bedding were supplied as well. We had a nice outdoor kitchen that was well equipped and lots of edibles in the gardens. Fruit was always available for free too. Things have apparantly changed since Mark and his family were there. Ed was kind to us and offered us rides to town and the beach, etc. We stayed for 5 days and had a great time.
