My wife and I stay here in James Michener Romm for 6 days from Feb 25 2015. I believed this 6 days would be unforgetable for a life time. I can't say anything negative after my stay. This bnb and its hosts gave us great experience.

The Michener room was more spacious and and extremely comfortable. This style was old world Hawaii and more Hilo way where the building has 100+ years history. Also, it's super clean of everything in the room and just feel like home. It also has a spacious lanai and right above a Koi Pond. Breakfast was fantastict and very delicious, giving us a fresh start of the day. We met the hosts, Matt, Carolina and Danny. There were all very friendly and ggve us warmly welcome. This bnb has touch down space everwhere. I will definitely stay here when visit Hilo again. Yes, it worth your money and give memories.

By the way, Hale bnb just 3 blocks to downtown Hilo. Restaurants and Saturday Farmer's Market just in walking distance.

Room tip: 1) James Michener Room is perfect and comfortable. Try it. 2) Park on site or on street was very easy. 3) Saturday's Farmer's Market is in walking distance.

Hilo Bay Hale is a very nice bed and breakfast tucked away in an unassuming part of the Big Island. We arrived late and were somewhat put-off by the surroundings; an adult store on the adjacent corner, the blaring television and slightly louder young child in the house next door, and the old van in the street out front with a black garbage bag covering its broken driver’s side window. Despite all this, Hilo Bay Hale is an upscale reprieve with well thought out details that one might not expect to find such as a Koi pond off two of the rooms and large resort style bathrooms. Mathew exceeded our expectations each morning with a delicious breakfast. He even began breakfast early for us one morning to accommodate our early start. In addition there was a washer and dryer available to guests—a major perk. Hilo Bay Hale was an excellent jumping off point due to its close proximity to the airport. If you can look past the offbeat nature of the local area—this is a very special place to stay while on the Big Island. Despite the

initial impressions we would certainly go back.

Room tip: We stayed in the Michener room, which was towards the back of the house, had the best bathroom, and the best view of the Koi pond. You can hear everything going on in the kitchen though.

An older house with pleasant front and back porches within a short walk to the bay. Excellent breakfast, tropical fruit eggs, bacon, coffee locally produced and fresh. Friendly helpful host, comfortable bed and easily accessible internet. Not a fancy or large room but comfortable.

We've stayed here three times (see previous glowing review) and we love the house and our hosts. But the shower valve was broken in the Bay Room. So we were moved immediately to the room at the front of the house. Same model valve, same problem. Because water was either scorching hot or freezing cold, showers were impossible for our two day stay. That's hard to deal with after days of hiking and exploring. I told Matt I'd be noting this in a review because it's kind of a deal-breaker and folks should know. We have always stayed in the James Michener Room. It and the Lava Room both have different models of shower valve, so we've never had any kind of problem before. In fact, the bathroom in the Michener Room is awesome. Should also note that the kids in the house next door (to the east) were really noisy in the afternoons. Never noticed that before. Could be new neighbors or an isolated incident. At any rate, the title says it all: Fix the shower valves and it's all good! But I would recommend staying in the Michener or Lava Rooms.

Room tip: Go with Michener or Lava Rooms.

Mahalo Martin for the glowing reviews in the past and staying with us again. We are replacing the fixtures in both rooms and in the meantime, instructing guests how to adjust the water temperature. We are always working hard to make every guests' experience a great one and we hope you will return again. And we are happy to give you a complimentary two day stay when you do.

The children next door love to play all day and into the early evening in the yard next to our house and we have asked the parents to try to keep the noise level down. We are doing all we can and will remind the parents again.

Hilo Bay Hale was excellent. We stayed one night in the Michener room after a 9 pm arrival into Hilo. It was easy to find and self check in was simple (keys waiting). Enjoyed listening to the frogs, but this may not be for everyone - they are loud! Nicely appointed room and bath. Wonderful host and delicious breakfast. Highly recommend - a gem in Hilo!
