“Basic. Cheap. Reasonably clean.”

Bring your own facial tissue and bar soap if you don't want to use the hotel's provided body wash. The higher up rooms with the view are worth the higher price. The hotel's web site spells out the pricing plain and simple. If you are the type that needs a lot of bathroom noise privacy, Manago is not for you - the slatted bathroom windows face the outside hallway and have no sound isolation.

The restaurant is also plain and simple. And good. A lot of locals eat there. But, the restaurant closes early.

“Decent Accomodations at a Fantastic Price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

The Manago Hotel, run by the same family for generations, is perfect for the budget conscious traveler. Full island exploration is easy from this small town location. The accommodations are basic, but the rooms are very clean and airy (no roaches as someone else reported in their review). Who needs a TV when the ocean view from your private lanai is so incredible? You are going to be out exploring the island anyway, right? If you are looking for tranquility, stay somewhere else. The price of this hotel is attractive to families who are traveling with young children. If you are looking for a comfortable, clean and inexpensive place to stay while you enjoy this island paradise, we enthusiastically recommend the Manago Hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms on the third floor are quieter.

“Experience Authentic Old Hawaii”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

The Manago Hotel in Captain Cook, Kona is as unpretentious as a hotel can get. The rooms have absolutely no-frills, not tv and no ac - not that you'll miss them. The one amenity is that soap is provided in the showers. The hotel is in the country, and all rooms face downhill and overlook the hotel orchard and garden, toward the ocean.

At the end of the day, you'll be treated to an amazing sunset from your lanai. At night the sky will be full of stars. But in the morning, if you're a light sleeper, you'll be woken up by the roosters - it is the country!

I love the Manago and stay here faithfully once a year. The food is incredibly fresh and delicious.

Room Tip: Higher floors are better but since there is no elevator, second floor is my choice.

“Good basis for exploring the island”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

The hotel is worth staying at for its location if you want to actively explore the Kona side of island. However, you have to be aware that this is not the hotel from your TV/movie based Hawaiian dream - it's an older property, where no or very little improvement must have been made during last 20 years...
GOOD: location (see title), spacious rooms, every day fresh towels, PRICE(!).
WORSE: location (roadside - traffic can be heard), very poor sound isolation between rooms (you hear everything people do in their rooms... and this IS very awkward!), front door does not come to the floor, so roaches (as in some previous reviews) can be reality - we only saw one, but I guess that's quite enough... bug spray was provided as we reported the problem to reception.
ALL IN ALL - acceptable if you want to explore the island, avoid if you want to stay at the hotel for most of the day.

Room Tip: Aim for the 3rd floor - best views.

“Old Hawaii”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

This is a very nice older property that is very well run and very clean. The newer motle type building has a distant view of the ocean, but no TV's, which we did not miss. This was our second stay at this place and were not disapointed. It is in a rural area and the roosters will crow and wake you up in the morning. They also have a resturant that is old fashioned and serves very good meals reasonably.

Room Tip: Room in the newer motel like building
