“lets keep it a secret”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

I have snowboarded all over the United States and Grand Targhee was one of my favorites stops! Though it does not have many choices for lodging that is what makes it so great, it is not crowded and the get some of the best snow around, so much that if you have a child skiing they ma need a snorkel! There are plenty of runs for everyone level , no lift lines and very affordable place to take the family. Though restaurants are limited right at the resort base there are some really great ones if you are willing to drive approx 15 min down the mountain. I have stayed at the Teewinot lodge and that was ok but like a dorm room, the Sioux lodge was much better and was much more spacious they were more like a studio apt with a loft and the spa and lifts are right across the parking lot. Now there is new lodging available if you want a bit of a nicer place called the Tower Residence that is also slopeside. I would totally recommend if you go to Grand Targhee to stay right at the Resort and not opt for the lodging down the mountain, it is not convenient or close unless you will be staying there for a long period of time.

“hidden secret”

Middle of the week, day of skiing, amazing to say the least. It was apparent that efforts been made to improve this place. The buildings, store, restaurants have all been updated. Don't expect big or lavish. This is a small resort with one store, one restaurant and one small hotel. You can take the Alltrans shuttle from JH for the day, excellent value that includes lift ticket ($90 ea). The food at restaurant was stunningly incredible. Best reuben sand. with mushroom soup I've had in a very very long time. Extremely friendly people. We got lucky and avoided that crowds. The place was empty with the best snow conditions I've experienced. Wide open trails, great snow, no people, what more can you ask for? Make a point to ski one day here if you vaca at Jackson Hole.

“What a Great Place to Go in the Summer!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2010

First, you have to know that the Grand Targhee Resort is a collection of three different properties. There is a regualar, hotel room building, but we stayed in the Sioux Lodge, which is great for families. There's a bunk bed in an alcove for kids, and then a separate queen size bed for the parents. We also had a wood burning fireplace, a table/chairs, and a microwave/mini fridge. The room was very comfortable for 4, very clean and looked brand new.

Unlike a previous summer reviewer from last year, we found both the pool/jacquizzi open. There was also a naturalist (sort of park ranger) on hand with a great office containing all sorts of animals furs, plants, rocks: you know that nature stuff. The naturalist conducts hikes 2x a day, and is also willing to spend a lot of time with you if you have questions. We had a great discussion about wolves.

You can take the chair lift to the top of the mountain for futher hikes. We also went horseback riding. There are 1 and 2 hour rides available; the 1-hr ride also took in some breathtaking scenery. For those who aren't familiar with the area, you are in the 'back' of the Grand Tetons, so you can see those famous mountains from the other side.

This summer, breakfast is included in the rate, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a full breakfast served on what looked like antique china. Quite a nice difference from the usual styrofoam stuff.

I must also comment on how friendly everyone was. Just as an example, when I called to book a room, I first asked for the hotel building, which was a cheaper rate. The operator said that, yes, there was a room available, but that the rest of the building was completely booked up that night with a wedding party. Thanks for the info! I was glad to pay only a few dollars more for the Sioux Lodge, and glad to have that info before I arrived.

And last, if you don't like always dining in the resort, the town of Driggs, Idaho is just down the hill about 6 miles. There are some good, and inexpensive restaurants, as well as the famous 'Spud Drive-In".

“Not a summer resort..”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2009

It would be a great place to stay in the winter - I assume. It was summer and the place was practically shut down. The room was huge and nice.. but the pool was covered, the hot tub closed and the only available dining was the snack bar.
There is NO SMOKING on the property and it took us over 30 minutes to get up the mountain to the resort. One way in- one way out.
