“These people must really hate their customers”

We've stayed at the Cedarberry several times because it's the only hotel in town. While the receptionist is always polite, the hotel in general has a very old, musty, feel to it. Our rooms have always been clean, but the occasional insect or mold growing in the shower has put us off. We most certainly don't think the $110-$130 they charge on some weekends is an absolute rip off.

Perhaps our biggest complaint is the complete lack of respect. My husband, newly returned from Iraq and Afghanistan, drove 8 hours to spend the weekend with our family in Sauk City for Memorial Day weekend. When we checked into the Cedarberry, we inquired as to if there was a military discount, which every other hotel (including in other countries) has offered to him. Not only did the Cedarberry refuse, but when we asked to speak with the manager/owner, we were told "No, he won't speak with you regarding this." We felt horribly disrespected and dishonored, especially on a holiday weekend that is dedicated to veterans. We have been treated with more respect in hotels in other countries than in the Cedarberry.

Overall, I wish to God there was someplace else to stay in Sauk City. It's overpriced, disrespectful, and not exactly the cleanest place.

“Good hotel, but I felt nickeled and dimed.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2010

I would have loved this hotel, except that they actually charged me extra for having a SECOND person in the room. I travel a lot, and this is my first experience where a hotel charged extra for a second person. The room already had two beds, two sets of towels, etc. The $8.00 a night extra didn't break my wallet, but it created a bit of annoyance from the get go. However, the staff was very helpful and courteous, the rooms were quiet and clean and the breakfast was adequate. There was also a well-maintained indoor pool which we didn't make use of.

“Awesome experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2010

Stayed here for a night with my Dad on a weekend getaway before a trip down the Wisconsin River. We both woke up the next day to both of our cell phones being dead and unable to charge. The manager over heard our dilemma and, with my wife being at home with a 4 month old, allowed me to use his cell phone to check up on them! Super nice guy!

“Comfortable, clean, and economical”

We were extremely pleased with this small town, non-chain motel. The room was spotless, the hosts were helpful and friendly, the pool was clean, and the continental breakfast was adequate. My husband was particularly pleased with the quality of the beds and pillows. If you are looking for information on local celebrity, August Derleth, the motel has a wealth of info and some of his books for sale. Also sell wines from local winery.

“Not for big groups”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 March 2009

The hotel is clean, rooms are average, pool area is nice and clean, pool water is warm. The maid staff are great and very happy to help. THE BAD: As a group we had about half the hotel Friday and Saturday night. The front desk and managment were rude and did nothing to accomidate us. We are fun easy people, we usually make friends with the staff and they invite us back, year after year. Not these guys! "Greedy" We travel together often for tournaments, and have never felt so unwelcome. They want $90 to use the breakfast area for an afternoon potluck, keep in mind we had just paid over $5000 for the 2 nights. We also asked for an extra hour for our check out on Sunday as we had made it to the championship game and had a lot of time to kill, not a chance. This has never been a problem at any of the other hotels that we have stayed at. Also don't plan on a hot shower in the morning, There heaters can't keep up. If your a big group, don't stay here.
