Honestly, I wasn't expecting much but this is a very nicely kept up hotel, especially because Hillsboro is a somewhat remote area of the state. I had problems trying to book a room using the hotel's very clunky website but a phone call accomplished a reservation. The place definitely has kept the look of a 'Sleep Inn'. All of the area B&Bs, camp grounds, cabins or ranches were booked or required a 2-night stay so we opted for the Hotel Hillsboro as a relatively inexpensive alternative.
Our surprisingly large room was very clean, nothing fancy, but had everything we needed. We enjoyed the indoor pool and whirlpool and basic continental breakfast. I believe the hotel was close to being fully booked on the Friday night we stayed. There was a good cross-section of ages staying there from families to elderly couples to Harley-riding folks.
We did not have much luck finding good places to eat in the area (neither Hillsboro or Wonewoc) but were surprised to find a very lively and nice bar/restaurant called Breezers tucked away right inside the hotel. The place was jumpin'! Head out to their comfortable outdoor deck to enjoy the night sky and fireflies.
One word of note, Breezers is open until 2:00 am and many of the hotel's rooms along the back face the outdoor deck so I'm not sure if noise would be an issue. Our room faced the parking lot which isn't a beautiful view but our room was very quiet.
We were visiting the area for its beautiful scenery and events in the Kickapoo River Valley Reserve. Amazing drives through Amish farms, down lots of little 'rustic' roads with cyclists. Canoeing, cycling and hiking are big here. Don't miss visiting the Kickapoo Visitor's Center to learn more about the Reserve and area. Also stop by Organic Valley Coop's national headquarters in LaFarge.
Room Tip: Rooms in the back of the property face an outdoor deck. Run the air to get rid of the slightly musty...
