“Could have been better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

We stayed as we usually do in a hot-tub king suite. Online the hotel featured wifi and spacious rooms. Upon arrival we noticed the room appeared to be unused for some time, some things like trim damaged and the wireless was improperly set up to work in the design of the hotel - did not make it all the way down to our room. Fortunately they offered a network cable and I was able to use the service.

A positive is that they found my fiances gold necklace that she had forgotten and returned it promptly.

“Great Find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

We were heading over to a family reunion and intended to stay in Reedsburg. When we arrived they were booked solid. We did not want to go back to Baraboo as we needed to head west the next morning. Upon looking at our phones for holels we cound the one in Hillsboro. The rate was fantastic and the person at the front desk held the room for us. Wehn we arrived we were thrilled to see how nice it was and how friendly the staff was. The restaurant and bar were on site, the pool was open late and the beds were wonderful. We will tell others about this as it is so easy to overlook since the town is so small.

“Pleasantly surprised”

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much but this is a very nicely kept up hotel, especially because Hillsboro is a somewhat remote area of the state. I had problems trying to book a room using the hotel's very clunky website but a phone call accomplished a reservation. The place definitely has kept the look of a 'Sleep Inn'. All of the area B&Bs, camp grounds, cabins or ranches were booked or required a 2-night stay so we opted for the Hotel Hillsboro as a relatively inexpensive alternative.

Our surprisingly large room was very clean, nothing fancy, but had everything we needed. We enjoyed the indoor pool and whirlpool and basic continental breakfast. I believe the hotel was close to being fully booked on the Friday night we stayed. There was a good cross-section of ages staying there from families to elderly couples to Harley-riding folks.

We did not have much luck finding good places to eat in the area (neither Hillsboro or Wonewoc) but were surprised to find a very lively and nice bar/restaurant called Breezers tucked away right inside the hotel. The place was jumpin'! Head out to their comfortable outdoor deck to enjoy the night sky and fireflies.

One word of note, Breezers is open until 2:00 am and many of the hotel's rooms along the back face the outdoor deck so I'm not sure if noise would be an issue. Our room faced the parking lot which isn't a beautiful view but our room was very quiet.

We were visiting the area for its beautiful scenery and events in the Kickapoo River Valley Reserve. Amazing drives through Amish farms, down lots of little 'rustic' roads with cyclists. Canoeing, cycling and hiking are big here. Don't miss visiting the Kickapoo Visitor's Center to learn more about the Reserve and area. Also stop by Organic Valley Coop's national headquarters in LaFarge.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back of the property face an outdoor deck. Run the air to get rid of the slightly musty...

“musty, damp rooms”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

I was in Hillsboro for a family birthday and many family members stayed here. My room was very damp and musty. I almost slipped on the tile bathroom floor due to the humidity. My brother stayed next door and his room smelled like smoke (this was a non smoking room)along with the musty damp feel. I mentioned the dampness to the lady at checkout and she said since the floor was concrete, it was like a basement and not much they could do about it.

Room Tip: Maybe try the second floor but no elevator here.

We are aware of the problem caused by the extensive rain and humidity this year. We are looking into the best way to remedy the problem so it isn't an issue next summer.

We will stay there again. The price was right, it was clean, friendly staff, pool and hot tub, free breakfast and the bar/restaurant were attached and had great food.
