“Stayed On The Island”

We had a ball! Stayed in Cabin number 5 on the Island from Sat 8/18/07 til Mon 8/27/07 we also had a large Pontoon boat. Couldn't be happier! You are truly away from it all on the island. This cabin sits right on the water on very level ground. Inside decor was "70's" but was more than adequate.. There is no cable TV or Sat TV just a pair of rabbit ears, so if you are a TV -A - Holic, the island isn't for you. All the staff were friendly and helpful.. They have a bit of an Ala-Carte-ness to their way of doing things.. Sheets are $6 for your bed for example.. The kitchen was furnished with a full sized fridge, a micro, Mr. Coffee and a gas oven/stove.. One BR is nice sized - the 2nd BR is kinda small with two twins in it but if you're fishing all day like we were, a place to lay down is all ya need.. No regrets and we will go back to Gypsy Villa!

“If you only go to one resort this is the one to go to!!!”

I had a great time on vacation at the Gypsy Villa Resort, it was better than I could have expected. The cabin was very clean and I truley appreciated the selection of movies they had to entertain us on calm evenings. We enjoyed playing tennis despite my inability to hit the ball properly. I took advantage of the sauna and whirlpool while the kids were having a good time on the playground. Taking the pontoon boat out was great, we got to see a very beautiful side of the northwoods that I believe others take for granted. Every member of my family loved this vacation. Everyone working there was exceptionally nice and understanding. I don't vacation often but when my father offered my family this getaway we couldn't resist and my family is thankful to have visited the gypsy villa and can't wait to do it again. I live in the northwoods and didn't expect much from this vacation but the Gypsy Villa can leave even locals in aww.

“Not like the broshure!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2006

We were very excited after we received our broshure from Gypsy Villa, however, the pics had to be taken LONG ago.The place now looks very run down & old.Everything needs a coat of paint or updating. It may have been grand once, not anymore.Major landscaping is needed on the mainland and island. The office (and first impression) was a mess. The beaches were not maintained, especially on the island. The slide is crooked, and in water that is too shallow. We hit our bottoms everytime we went down. There are old cars, boats, rafts, grills laying around.Looked kinda like a junkyard.
Read every word in the broshure because if you need anything extra, they will charge you for it.They take pets, but charge you $15/day.FYI-My only request from them was, what I thought was not too unsual, was met with a reply of "we usually do not supply extra toilet paper".I was also told "my generation" expects a lot and it used to be (back in her generation, I guess) guests brought "everything".She did give me 2 rolls, though.I didn't have the nerve to ask for paper towels,so I bought my own the next day.

The lake is beautiful and there is one really nice playset on the island.
We would not stay here again. We actually left a day early, which we never have ever done before on any vacation in 13 years. We truly are not fussy people and have had many awesome vacations, this was not one of them.

“Gypsy Villa - Beware of what you're getting”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2006

We just returned from a week at the Gypsy Villa Resort. We stayed at one of the Mainland Houses. My impression is that this resort was really great a long time ago, but it hasn't been kept up.

PROS: The house was very clean. It wasn't a modern house, but it was very adequate if all you want is a large clean house on a lake. The pontoon boat was adequate but don't expect a high-end boat. There were no soft cussioned seats like Pontoon boats I've rented at other places. This one just had plastic chairs placed on the boat.

CONS: The worst part is the amentities that were on the Island. Almost everything on their website is not true. Yes, they have a ping pong table, but it's an old cement one with a large hunk of cement missing on one side. Yes, they have tennis, but the cement court is not level. They have a game room, but there were dead bugs everywhere. I don't just mean a few bugs, I'm talking a thick layer of bugs on the pool table, and thousands of dead bugs along the windows, on the games, and on the floor. So basically there is no game room. The sauna was locked when we went there. When I asked about it I was told that the hours were in one of the papers we were given at check-in. Even the lady at the front desk had to look twice because it was hard to find. Turns out that the Sauna is only open on Sun-Thurs from 1:30-4:30pm. It was Friday when I asked, so no Sauna. The beach on the island was also a disappointment. The picture on their website was taken a long time ago. The picture shows a permanent raft in the water that you could jump from. It was no longer there. The slide in the water is there but it is very crooked, and the bottom of the slide is rusted. So basically the beach is just the natural sandy bottom that is all along the island, there is no sand on the land portion of the beach.

The other thing that bothered us was the unfriendly service. Our family can ignore a lot, especially if the people running the place are friendly and trying to ensure you have everything you need. These people kept wanting to charge us for everything. They didn't seem to care if we needed anything, and if we did they were going to charge us. Even the latter on the pontoon boat was $25. I had to listen to a lecture on how expensive these latters are and that's why they charge so much. I've rented pontoon boats before and have never paid for a latter. Also, the water tubes were $15 / day. They told me it was $45 for the week, even though the 2006 price list said $35. The tubes were definetely on their last leg with one handle was almost completely ripped through.

We had a great vacation exploring the lakes of Eagle River on the pontoon boat, but with no help from the Gypsy Villa Resort. I will definetely NOT return. There are so many other lodging choices in this area to choose from that look a lot nicer.
