We just returned from a week at the Gypsy Villa Resort. We stayed at one of the Mainland Houses. My impression is that this resort was really great a long time ago, but it hasn't been kept up.
PROS: The house was very clean. It wasn't a modern house, but it was very adequate if all you want is a large clean house on a lake. The pontoon boat was adequate but don't expect a high-end boat. There were no soft cussioned seats like Pontoon boats I've rented at other places. This one just had plastic chairs placed on the boat.
CONS: The worst part is the amentities that were on the Island. Almost everything on their website is not true. Yes, they have a ping pong table, but it's an old cement one with a large hunk of cement missing on one side. Yes, they have tennis, but the cement court is not level. They have a game room, but there were dead bugs everywhere. I don't just mean a few bugs, I'm talking a thick layer of bugs on the pool table, and thousands of dead bugs along the windows, on the games, and on the floor. So basically there is no game room. The sauna was locked when we went there. When I asked about it I was told that the hours were in one of the papers we were given at check-in. Even the lady at the front desk had to look twice because it was hard to find. Turns out that the Sauna is only open on Sun-Thurs from 1:30-4:30pm. It was Friday when I asked, so no Sauna. The beach on the island was also a disappointment. The picture on their website was taken a long time ago. The picture shows a permanent raft in the water that you could jump from. It was no longer there. The slide in the water is there but it is very crooked, and the bottom of the slide is rusted. So basically the beach is just the natural sandy bottom that is all along the island, there is no sand on the land portion of the beach.
The other thing that bothered us was the unfriendly service. Our family can ignore a lot, especially if the people running the place are friendly and trying to ensure you have everything you need. These people kept wanting to charge us for everything. They didn't seem to care if we needed anything, and if we did they were going to charge us. Even the latter on the pontoon boat was $25. I had to listen to a lecture on how expensive these latters are and that's why they charge so much. I've rented pontoon boats before and have never paid for a latter. Also, the water tubes were $15 / day. They told me it was $45 for the week, even though the 2006 price list said $35. The tubes were definetely on their last leg with one handle was almost completely ripped through.
We had a great vacation exploring the lakes of Eagle River on the pontoon boat, but with no help from the Gypsy Villa Resort. I will definetely NOT return. There are so many other lodging choices in this area to choose from that look a lot nicer.
