“Perfect getaway for a Guy fishing trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2011

If you are looking for a luxury vacation then go to Lake Geneva and pay 300-400 a night. This is for the outdoormen's getaway who want a nice Fishing pontoon to explore beautiful Cranberry Lake. We had 6 guys who wanted a fishing excursion that inlcuded 2 clean kitchens, 2 bathrooms, 4 bedrooms, 2 fireplaces, 2 living rooms, two grills, the entire Pier to fish from 24/7, with several docks and shore fishing in a bay that was walking distance.

The office was cluttered but the lady is 80 + years old and she has over 6 decades of paper in her office. The grounds are emaculate and the service is exceptional. Dean will do anything he can to make your stay comfortable. I have not seen a man on this planet that can outwork him and he does with a smile while working from sun up to sundown to make your vacation the best it can be. The bigger the party the better the value, we paid 250 each which included a pontoon, two boats/ without motor for 4 days. BTW...the fishing was great for Walleye, Northern, Crappies, Perch, Smallmouth Bass. Many caught from a dock right outside our cabin.

“True Northwoods Retreat!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 May 2010

If you expect luxury, this is not the place. HOWEVER, if you want the beauty and fun of the Wisconsin Northwoods or just a week on the water, then this is the place to go!!
For kids, YES, there is a swimming beach, there is tennis, basketball, indoor video games (antique, but still fun), airhockey, etc. The hosts sponsor a marshmallow roast on one of the days, and frequently have other activities planned during the week. There are also paddle-boats to rent.
Weather permitting, there is fishing galore--we caught an 21" bass our first night out. Many of the cabins come with a pontoon boat and/or a small fishing boat. We usually make at least one boat voyage along the chain into Eagle River.
Eagle River and Three Lakes are your average northwoods tourist town. Lots of little shops with nicknacks and souvenirs. There's a couple coffee shops with free wi-fi. The public library also offers free internet. FWIW, I couldn't get a signal on my US Cellular phone. I decided that was probably a Good Thing--I'm on vacation!!!

“shabby but chic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2009

I loved it. The cottages are outdated interior wise but come fully equipted. They look like little houses. I enjoyed my time so much as over the past 26 years we have had 5 generations stay in the cabin we were at.. brought back so many memories for some. Such a quite place to stay and the scenory is beautiful. My whole family and extended family plan to come back in a year or 2!!

“Ideal for families, boaters, or fishermen.....only if there's a rate decrease.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2009

We were curious as to why there were few good photos of interiors; we probably wouldn't have chosen it for our stay had we known. We thought it would be more like an actual resort so we were disappointed. The cabin was cleaner than most hotels (I travel with disinfectant and wipe down all the fixtures, remotes, switches, and bathroom anyway). It was very private and quiet. Kitchen was well furnished with everything you'd need to cook (we didn't). Ours was "recently renovated" - maybe with the humongous hot tub in the bedroom (we didn't use it). It had a little fireplace (unused), but this was not much of an addition to the dark paneling and 60s decor (except for the surprise glass top dining table). There was no cable and the handful of channels on an old tv were not reliable enough to get interested in any program (they said they are working on this, in addition to getting WiFi - both would definitely be a plus). Kindle couldn't find a connection, nor did the computers. A pool would have been nice, since there's no beach. I didn't mind using our own towels and sheets, but it's a hassle to have to clean everything before you leave - hence, no tip - we left it even cleaner than when we moved in. You even have to take your trash to the bins!. The people were nice, and the views were pretty and relaxing. They allowed pets so that's a plus. Close to town with a few pretty nice, homey restaurants, and I found one great place for shopping (a clothing/rower's shop!). This place is ideal for families, fishermen or boaters ONLY, but VERY overpriced for what you get in return. We stayed in a much more comfortable, luxurious and convenient rooms for less; in fact, we stayed in a few SUITES for less on the way home!

“Great place to stay if your going to the Northwoods!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2009

My wife and I have stayed at a few places in the Eagle River area. This place is by far the best place i've been to. We've been to a place where we've had to pretty much pack everything from pots, pans, kitchen appliances to our own sheets. Yeah, yeah, yeah anyone who has stayed here would say the decor maybe dated a bit. I can tell you Gerta, Dean and staff do an outstanding job of keeping the cabins clean and cozy. Gerta and Dean have done everything possible to make our stays ones to remember. We've already stayed at Gypsy Villa the past 2yrs. and planning our third. This place is great for anyone who likes fishing, water, nature/wildlife or anything outdoor. If your not one for a rustic "naturey" feel and privacy you could try the overpriced condos (W. E. Lodge). We've seen a zillion things from deer crossing from the island, black bear damage( haven't yet seen the bear), BIG fish, eagles/eagle nests of course, their float plane "fly-in" and leaves change color (fall time). If you plan on staying at G.V. resort. Make sure you bring a coat for nighttime activities, it can get quite chilly at night. I would tell anyone and their brother to stay at G.V.
