How do you say "underwhelmed" any more than just that? Add "annoyed" and "disappointed", I suppose. I bought a gift certificate for a stay at this inn as a present. We reserved the room for a supposedly wonderful birthday weekend celebration for February 2007. When we called to schedule, we were asked if we would be dining at the inn. The answer was a very certain "yes" as Buckhannon, WV isn't exactly the dining capital of the world. Two days prior to our arrival, the manager called to confirm our reservation and to let us know that there would be a little change in plans-- the inn wouldn't begin serving dinners for the season until 2 days after our departure. By this time, we'd made all the travel arrangements, so we swallowed the diappontment and honored the commitment.
In spite of an 8 inch snow between our house and the inn, we traveled the 6 hours to reach the destination, only to stand in the main lodge entry area for more than 15 minutes waiting for someone to show up and provide a key to the room. There was no sense of a real welcome. When she arrived, the manager was unapologetic about the wait and the inconvenience of our having to make last minute dinner arrangements. She also mentioned that she'd "brushed" some snow away from the entry to the lodge, and that's how we'd identify our room entrance. We pulled the car up the steep, snow-covered and icy drive to the lodge, only to find that there was nowhere clear to park, and that the entrance hadn't been cleared at all. We stepped from the car into 8 inches of snow, and then trekked another 50+ feet to the door in the snow.
Once inside, it was obvious that the accommodations were beautiful, but not hospitable, and not what we'd hoped for. The lodge is 2 stories, and when the temperature is comfortable in the sitting area downstairs, the upstairs sleeping quarters are broiling. Yes, so hot that even in 10 degree temperatures, open windows didn't make it truly comfortable. If you turned down the thermostat to make the upstairs bearable, the downstairs was so frigid a coat was required to sit inside. No, I'm not kidding. Aside from that, we'd booked the Pocahontas Room, which the website says has a king-sized bed, which we really wanted. The truth is that the room has a queen-size bed with a foam pad that fits a double bed top. The 4-inch height and 10-inch width differentials between the actual mattress and the foam pad made for very uncomfortable sleeping. The bathroom sink drained slowly, leaving soap and toothpaste scum in the bowl. And although we stayed 2 nights, the room was not straightened, nor fresh towels brought, for the 2nd night.
I tried to draw the blinds and the strings were broken so that the blinds wouldn't rise evenly. The outlet into which the television was plugged didn't work, so after some real maneuvering, we managed to rig an extension that would allow us to at least check the weather report. There were none of the niceties that you expect of a highly-regarded and expensive inn. For instance, the soaps and shampoos were cheap brands and there was no hair conditioner, and the hairdryer was a small travel model stashed under the sink. Two of the bath towels were worn so badly that holes were evident.
The breakfast offered was adequate, but if you didn't want the omelet you had to settle for oatmeal. There were no options. The bar was open on the "honor system", but drinks were rather expensive-- $6.00 for a bottle of Ayinger beer. Add to all this the fact that, while the manager blamed "someone else" for the error in the dinner reservation, we discovered from reading some house literature as we were sipping our $6.00 beers that dinner isn't served unless there are at least 8 guests. We were the only ones staying in the lodge, and only one other couple was in the main house. Our birthday dinner simply wasn't offered because there weren't enough guests to bother with fixing it.
We left there feeling rather sad for the inn. It appeared that once upon a time, someone really liked the place. Today, it lacks the care and nuturing that are required of a truly fine inn. We will not return, and we cannot recommend the inn to others.

My wife and I Simply loved the place. The grounds and facilities are absolutely fantastic. The owners are gracious. I only wish I could have stayed longer. it is true that you will not be "smothered" with service. Thank goodness. We were allowed to wander the property and explore. If you needed something, you simply had to ask for it. We can't wait to go back!

This was a lovely experience !! The inn is an authentic log cabin (2 actually) and a new bldg on the hill - the lodge. The decor was marvelous and the grounds so peaceful and beautiful. No noises just nature. I walked about and found in many little nooks -a garden swing, birdhouses, a tree house, ponds, etc. Then inside - you can see that Liz and Pat - the owners - have a great love for life. Books on gardening, decorating, art, cooking, history every where !! The touches to the already authentic log houses are pearfect and our room _ The Randolph suite was so unique and beautiful. We really loved it especially the little back porch with the wicker furniture and victorian touches. You can see Liz's artistic nature and love for people in everything !!
Breakfast was a wonderful experience with flower garnishes, candles, lovely music and delicious food. Bobbie , the housekeeper,is so very nice and very sensitive to your needs as far as making your dining pleasurable and your stay perfect. We really recommend this Inn to anyone searching for a quiet, relaxing place with beauty and nature abounding !!!

Good grief! I don't know who those whiney people who wrote the last review were, but they need to just stay home! Apparently they are either used to being fetched for and kow-towed to like royalty or they are Motel 6 regulars who thought $100/night ought to buy them some kind of fantasy treatment.

Deerpark Country Inn is world class. The rooms may be smallish but they are quaint and comfortable. The restaurant serves gourmet meals and the wine list is extensive. The staff is friendly and makes guests feel at home without being overbearing. Guests can relax and enjoy the inn and the grounds - if you need something, they are happy to provide it; if you want to be left alone, you can enjoy the solitude.

This is a beautiful, rustic, log cabin country inn with incredible dining, friendly service, and a movie set location! We've stayed there every time we go "back east" and will continue to do so."
