Pre-booked this location as we had stayed at other America's BVI's in the Midwest with satisfactory results. Looked run down from outside, some garbage blowing in the parking lot, but checked in anyway (Hey, they had my credit card number so how bad can it be?). Clerk#1 interrupted serving me to chat with the owner about a visit from the FBI earlier that day. Got to hear all about their problems with a former employee. We needed to use the elevator which is at the opposite end of the hallway from the lobby. It stank badly, mold and musty, and the walls were blotched. Carpet in the hall was dirty. Got to the room, door lock was broken right out of the door frame. Had a debate about leaving but 'how bad can it be?' said hubby. Had important business to do online that night, no internet. Went to desk, also requested toilet paper as only a few sheets on the one roll and no spare. "No internet? That's strange. Let me re-set it. Give me 10 minutes" says Clerk #1. Decided to take our dog for a short walk while waiting, and there was the guy who was supposedly resetting the internet out walking a couple little dogs--probably belonging to the owner. Same dogs yapped and growled at length everytime someone went down the hall. No internet. Spent lots of money on cell phone roaming instead. Opened doors wide to try to air out the room, then got some sleep. Checked with desk early in AM, Clerk #2 says 'Internet? It's been down for, like, 4 months!'. Oh great, bad room, bad smell, bad service, and then we get lied to. Went for breakfast whichwas stale but not awful. Clerk #3 comes on duty, heard our complaints, and said that the internet doesn't work on the 3rd floor where we were and we should have been put on the 4th floor. She let hubby into a room where the wireless worked, though it was too late for most of what we needed. Clerk #3 tried to make amends but-- it's still a really, really bad hotel!
