Booked two night stay well in advance for the Mary Kay room; on arrival we were in
Bridal Suite. The problem arose probably because this B&B never did send a confirmation
by either e-mail or regular mail even after 2 e-mail and one phone request to do so.
That was a clue of how the business might be run. This 100 year old semi-mansion
has the look and some of the charm of a house of that era; but in the close-up, quirky
details and oversights have greatly diminished what probably was once a great B&B.
Examples: soap but no shampoo: no exterior sign-to let you know you have found it:
fridge but no microwave or coffee maker; no evidence of recent dusting. After 24+
years of being a B&B with the same owners it badly needs a detailed refurbishing-
both in deep cleaning the nooks&crannies and either fixing or replacing that which is
worn out, Mind you, the place still has charm, what with the period furniture & woodwork,
a lovely front porch, a good upper deck-to view the sunsets, and "the look", etc.
Charm, though, has its limits when it comes to cleanliness and amenities.
The breakfast, such as it is, is a very basic "starter kit"-for 2 people it all fits
nicely in a paperboard, kid-sized, lunch bucket style box conveniently placed on the
steps by the front door. It will get you started right to a nearby restaurant if you are
a big breakfast person or probably will hold you over to lunch if you are not.
Check-in is lengthy as you likely will be engaged & enchanted (or not) by the
many & detailed stories the two lady owners have to tell; just be sure to allow the time.
The owners do have good advice about local activities and eating.
Chelan is a nice enough town-decent dining, good walking & biking areas, & of
course an emphasis on lake activities.
Overall, we might stay in Chelan again but not at Whaley's under present
ownership-it is for sale.
