“Faded Glory”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 June 2011

Booked two night stay well in advance for the Mary Kay room; on arrival we were in
Bridal Suite. The problem arose probably because this B&B never did send a confirmation
by either e-mail or regular mail even after 2 e-mail and one phone request to do so.
That was a clue of how the business might be run. This 100 year old semi-mansion
has the look and some of the charm of a house of that era; but in the close-up, quirky
details and oversights have greatly diminished what probably was once a great B&B.
Examples: soap but no shampoo: no exterior sign-to let you know you have found it:
fridge but no microwave or coffee maker; no evidence of recent dusting. After 24+
years of being a B&B with the same owners it badly needs a detailed refurbishing-
both in deep cleaning the nooks&crannies and either fixing or replacing that which is
worn out, Mind you, the place still has charm, what with the period furniture & woodwork,
a lovely front porch, a good upper deck-to view the sunsets, and "the look", etc.
Charm, though, has its limits when it comes to cleanliness and amenities.
The breakfast, such as it is, is a very basic "starter kit"-for 2 people it all fits
nicely in a paperboard, kid-sized, lunch bucket style box conveniently placed on the
steps by the front door. It will get you started right to a nearby restaurant if you are
a big breakfast person or probably will hold you over to lunch if you are not.
Check-in is lengthy as you likely will be engaged & enchanted (or not) by the
many & detailed stories the two lady owners have to tell; just be sure to allow the time.
The owners do have good advice about local activities and eating.
Chelan is a nice enough town-decent dining, good walking & biking areas, & of
course an emphasis on lake activities.
Overall, we might stay in Chelan again but not at Whaley's under present
ownership-it is for sale.

Room Tip: bring a feather duster and vacumn

“Ripped off by Mary Kay”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2010

Thankfully, my husband and I, along with my sister and brother-in-law only stayed for one night in this stale, unkept so called B&B. We booked last minute and there is no doubt we were suckers as we paid over $170.00 for a double bed, small shower and a breakfast in a basket. To say the breakfast was unsatisfactory would be an understatement. There is no doubt Mary Kay stocks up at costco with some juice and yogurts and adds a muffin, stuffs everything in a basket, and sends you on the porch to eat. This character home is historic but has not been kept up. The carpeting is disgusting and it bothered me to remove my sandals at the bottom of the stairs as Mary Kay requested, because I did not want my bare feet touching the carpets.
The furniture is tired and there are odd maniquin dolls throughout the house along with plastic flowers collecting dust. The entire home is creepy. Mary Kay told us that thousands of people had stayed at her B&B, but I wonder if anyone stayed twice.

“Very disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2009

Our overall experience was very poor for several reasons. Our room had cob webs in the ceiling fan, bed headboard fabric and the bedroom window looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. It was filthy, and the window mounted air-conditioner was noisy, poorly installed, and even some duct tape was used to "repair" a hole to the outside. The carpet (along with many other fixtures) should have been replaced years ago. The whole house needs a major cleaning, and has the appearance of being well past its prime. It needs a lot of basic repairs, painting, etc. The bathroom was small. No shampoo or blow dryer was supplied.

At some point in the evening (while we were out), the common area of the house was closed off, so when we returned around 9pm, we only had access to the front door hall area, and our room. While a "continental" breakfast was mention in passing when we booked a room on the phone, the breakfast was probably the biggest disappointment. When we came downstairs in the morning, we found 5 or 6 small boxes on the floor (or on one of the lower stairs or landing) with guests last names written on the boxes with black felt pen. THAT was breakfast, along with coffee from a carafe, and paper cups - again, only a few feet from the front door. The common area of the house was still closed off to guests, so we could eat our "breakfast" in our room (one of us on the small chair, one of us sitting on the bed, I guess), sit on the stairs by the front door, or eat on the veranda (too cold first thing in the morning!). No sign of our "hosts". "Breakfast" was two very tired apple turnovers, two small tins of apple juice from concentrate, and two paper coffee cups with a small amount of (again, tired) chopped strawberries. Oh, and two plastic spoons!

Our overall experience was so poor, that we could only laugh about it, pack up, and head out to find a place for breakfast!

Our poorest B & B experience ever!

“Definitely Worth Staying!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2008

My boyfriend and I stayed at Whaley Mansion B&B (Mary Kay suite) for 1 evening. The B&B is run by two very nice ladies. The B&B is located in a nice and quiet tree-lined neighborhood.

The B&B easy to locate and an a couple steps (less than 3 blocks?) to downtown Chelan. There is plenty of street parking.

The only thing Mary Kay & Carol ask from guests is for them to take off their shoes when in the house because of the carpets (which make sense!).

We stayed in the Mary Kay Suite at a very reasonable price. The room was clean and neat. It is a nice size room with a seperate sitting area and 3/4 bath (small shower).

On this particiluar weekend, it was the wine harvest "crush-week" in Chelan, most of the rooms were booked or very expensive; Best Western's daily room rate was $170 + tax.

I couldnt make myself pay that much for a 2-star hotel and I wasnt planning on spending my whole day in a hotel room!

Breakfast is served in a cute to-go box with all the basic continental goodies. The breakfast menu varies. On this trip, the breakfast box contained, OJ, fresh garden apples & bran muffins.

Whaley Mansion is an affordable & comfortable stay. It is great for a romantic escape, family trip or backpackers. I definitely plan on returning when in the area touring Chelan wineries.

“Historical House”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2008

This Historical house is located just outside of downtown Chelan. Just a walk over the bridge to be downtown with nice little shops and restaurants.

While it only has 6 rooms, each room is something like out of a picture book. Every room has it's own bathroom so no need to share like some of the places we stayed.

Comfortable, quiet and run by Mary Kay and Carol who have been doing this for over 25 years.

Make sure you get one of Carol's Chocolates and ask Mary Kay about Chelan - she knows all the stories.

Definitely a place to stop in Chelan. Found out aftewords my inlaws had stayed there too 15 years ago. Neat.
