“Clean Roadside Hotel close to Mt. St. Helen drive”
This area is not a place where you will find a wide assortment of luxury or top of the line hotels. Our goal was to be as close to the Mt. St. Helen Volcanic Monument as possible and then drive the next day to Mt. Rainier. This family-run hotel worked out well. It is not fancy but it is clean and comfortable and the price was reasonable. I found it to be in a safe location and didn't have any trouble with noise level. It is literally right at the beginning of the road to Mt. St. Helen's so it was very convenient for us. The woman at the front desk was very friendly and helpful; she had information on Mt. St. Helens including opening/closing times of the different visitor centers and gave us some excellent tips to make the most of our time. There is an expresso stand right outside the hotel so we stopped on our way to the monument and had some lattes and hot chocolates. As you drive to Mt. St. Helen, stop at Patty's Place (another friendly, homey family run business) for some elk or beef burgers, sweet potato fries, and some yummy cobbler. (Resaurants are not abundant in the area so we were glad to find Patty's with its good food and friendly staff). Make sure to go all the way to the Johnson's Observatory if you are visiting Mt. St. Helens--the views are spectacular and surprisingly all four of us enjoyed the brief movie they have in the visitor center which gave some important background information. The other visitor centers have interesting views and info as well but the Observatory is by far the best.
