“Not recommended would never stay again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2010

After being given an occupied room to start with, we got a different room that had old wrappers from previous guests, a dirt line on the carpet around the outside and an almond on the floor which made us wonder when they last vacuumed. When my husband returned from a trip to the corner store he showed me a picture of a cockroach he had killed right outside the room which caused us to turn the room upside down checking for others. The "continental breakfast" is just donuts, so plan to eat at the nearby Denny's or Bojangles. To top it off, we were tornado warned and not only did the staff not know about it, they couldn't tell us where to go to be safer than our second floor room. We were obviously visitors to the area, so we had no idea what to do other than try to take shelter in the concrete corridor below us. Would never stay again and wouldn't recommend anyone else to either.

“After a bad start, otherwise perfectly decent”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2009

Overall: Not the best neighborhood; staff (all one of them) was friendly; be sure to inspect your room on arrival; otherwise perfectly decent, but don't expect a real continental breakfast.

Yes, the neighborhood appears a bit under the poverty line at night, but it's not scary at all in the mornings. The clerk was friendly on arrival and we got into the room quickly.

First thing we noticed was that the door had been crowbarred open. Second were the missing light bulbs from all the desk and floor lamps (which were unplugged). Inquired at the front desk and the clerk personally came up and replaced the bulbs with CFCs and got the lamps working, which was a nice personal touch.

The explanation for the crowbarred door only came after expression of disbelief and incredulity from the clerk. When he saw it, he admitted it had been crowbarred open because the door lock's battery had died and there was no other way to get into the room. After some research online, I call shenannigans: card-reading hotel locks can be opened at the bottom and a device plugged in that will power the lock and open the door in case of a dead battery.

Once the aforementioned issues were addressed (bulbs) and "addressed" (door frame), the room was small, but perfectly decent. Clean, partially refurbished, and comfortable, although some fixtures were clearly still dilapidated (desk, chair). The night was quiet, tho possibly due to light patronage. I discovered the clock was plugged into the outlet controlled by the light switch, resulting in us almost missing our wake-up time.

Check out was also very easy. The continental breakfast is of the "least they could do" variety: boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts. C'mon, even no-frills Microtel does better than that.

“Nice Stay”

For a family who wants to stay at a nice place without spending a lot of money, this hotel is ideal. Check in was quick and easy with a friendly staff. The room was very clean, beds were comfortable (would have liked a better pillow, next time I will bring my own). Bathroom was small, but has been renovated nicely with marble. The refrigerator and microwave were nice and clean. Pool was very clean and my kids had the pool to themselves the majority of the time they were in it. Although the hotel is located right off of a busy road it was surprisingly quiet. It was about a 15 minute easy drive to the beach. Overall our stay was quite pleasant and I would recommend this hotel.

“Best Red Roof Ever”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2009

Granddaughter & I stayed one night. Check-in gentleman seemed a little curt so we were expecting typical Red Roof Inn. Didn't have regular room available so we had a King. Was pleasantly surprised to find extremely clean large room (and I am picky), comfortable beds, very nice bathroom with marble walled shower and plush towels, surprised room was quiet considering location. Didn't use pool but it appeared clean and inviting. Grounds were also clean. Have stayed at Red Roof Inns before but this one ranks top.

“Allmost everything great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 May 2009

This place has been renovated in the last year or two. The only way I know it wasn't recently constructed was the old rate/safety/legal notice on the back of the room door!

The breakfast is just juice, coffee, and an array of KrispyCream donuts. But the coffee machine makes each cup to order and you can get a variety of fancy types. Every room has a waist-high fridge (not a micro fridge) and a small microwave. There was a lot of frost in the freezer but I didn't need that space. There are some restaurants and grocery stores with a reasonable driving distance.

My biggest coomplaint is that there was no printed listing of what is on each of the 100 channels of cable TV!

If you want to go to the Virginia Beach shore you better checked about the availability of parking. I think there are some free (or nearly free) state run beaches that might be much less crowded.

Everything was quite clean and well maintained. It looked as though they had a previous guest that really marked up the bathroom walls as some of the paint was a slight different shade. Shame on the guest! The pool looked decent but we wern't there for that. Just a short visit with family but staying in the hotel so as not to intrude and to have more privacy.

This gives me a much, much better impression of the RedRoof chain! No unnecessary frills but a good price and everyting we really needed. The wifi was free and worked fine. Our room faced the pool. I don't know about the rooms in the back.

This is a second choice to the La Quinta on Newtown road because they have a better breakfast but only the more expensive rooms there have a fridge and microwave. See my review of that hotel. It is a very close second.
