Built in the 1920s the Stonewall Jackson Hotel is one of a string of "old Virginia" hotels built during the era. The Cavalier in Virginia Beach is another such example. A small but inviting lobby, large windows in the rooms and a simple elegance of decor all combine to give guests a unique experience while there. The breakfast is above average in freshness of ingredients and preparation. I especially enjoyed the lobby where one can lounge and watch the world pass by. The side bar is average but could use a little more thought--for example while there is a fire it is natural gas. A wood fire would be so much better. The beds were comfortable and I appreciated the heat being adequate and quiet. No loud air handler in the room. Parking is good. Next door is Blackfriars Playhouse. Within walking distance is the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace museum, Mary Baldwin College and numerous antique shops. So, in summary, the location is great, the food good and the accomodations above average. I've stayed twice and plan on doing so again when the right play is on at Blackfriars.
