“We loved it! Perfect Weekend Getaway!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2011

We spent a weekend in the Woodland Cabin, the lower level cabin. It was an absolutely perfect weekend! The cabin was clean, cute, private, and just really nice. I have read these other reviews and can't understand some of them. The bathroom was not that small, niether was the shower. There was no rust, dust or cobwebs anywhere in the cabin or main house. The furniture was older but very well taken care of - no stains or scratches on anything that I noticed. The hottub was private, in fact the whole cabin was private. The Inn's owner, Anita, was very helpful and a great cook. She made delicious breakfasts using fresh veggies from her own garden. She was available whenever we needed anything, but also left us alone to come and go as we pleased. As for the price, it seemed very reasonable to me. I have paid much more to stay in places much less appealing. I have recommended this place to friends and we are considering making it a yearly weekend getaway!

“loved it so much”

Anita was wonderful. We didn't want for anything. The Inn is beautiful, and clean. I will be coming back again, and sending all my friends and family there.

“ABSOLUTE HEAVEN”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2011

The Milton House Bed and Breakfast Inn is a real treasure nestled near Skyline Drive. The drive from DC is not difficult and, for me, has always been relaxing knowing what full well what's at the destination. The town of Stanley is your typical "small town" and a great retreat from the hustle and bustle of "jet-set DC." There are just enough restaurants and shops to keep you busy for a great getaway weekend. The movie theater always has current films. Church on Sunday? Whatever your flavor, you can find it.

The Inn from the outside looks like your typical B&B with a well manicured yard. The home has some historical significance in that it was originally purchased from the Sears catalog. I didn't know that Sears used to sell homes. The quality of the home is excellent; the same standard as the old Kenmore appliances, I suppose. That being said...what Anita and John, the innkeepers have done with the home is absolutely amazing. The interior is decorated absolutely beautiful. The decorative wallpaper, traditional furnishings, fireplaces, and chandeliers add to the elegance and charm of this wonderful home. The linens are high quality, the mattresses are extremely comfortable, and the pillows are "just right." You will not want to leave the bed...and you don't have to. The room was meticulously cleaned and linens carefully placed. I was particularly impressed with the book that Anita had put together for the room which contained information on some many activities of things to do in the area. I also loved the selection of coffee, tea, and hot cocoa in my room and special touch of a wine bottle opener and ice bucket. Anita and John had thought of everything.

Breakfast at the Inn was out of this world. You can fill up on breakfast and skip lunch. There was a lot of food. Anita cooks like a gourmet chef. I remember the first time I at there, I started with yogurt and granola and fruit. There were also pastries on the table. I thought that was it. No, there was more. There was a delicious western omelet with cheese, onions, and peppers and link maple sausage. My coffee cup was never empty. Did I say the food is excellent? Anita and John are also excellent conversationalists. They are extremely cordial and gracious hosts. I have been to this Inn several times over the last few years and have never been disappointed.

I absolutely love my visits to the Milton Inn. It is such a wonderful getaway from the DC rat race. I always leave feeling relaxed and refreshed. I have always stayed in the main house and once stayed in the room with the jacuzzi, which only added to the relaxation. Though I have children of my own, I am thankful for the "no kids" policy. It is the reason I chose to stay at the Milton Inn for the first time. It is a wonderfully relaxing home for adults. If you go there once, you'll be back again!

“I felt it was overpriced for what we got”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 March 2011

My Husband and I rented the lower level cabin in September 2010 for 2 nights for his birthday. It looked really cute from the website, but when we got there I could see it wasn't at all what we thought it would be. The bathroom is tiny with a rusty base board heater. The shower is like a tiny, dark closet (almost comical really because my husband is tall and lean and could barely move in there and good luck finding room to even shave your legs if you're a woman!), and the whole room just didn't feel like it was worth $200 per night. Floors and furniture were really dated and just didn't feel luxurious at all (sloppy laminate flooring, we thought it was wood flooring when we went to the website).
Also breakfast was a let down. The upper level cabin seemed to be the only other room rented that weekend. So when we had breakfast delivered to the room each morning, we were disappointed to get OJ from a carton (not fresh), pillsbury cinnamon rolls from a can (really?), and some whatever eggs with tomato and sausage tossed in along with some bacon. I was hoping for the B&B experience where you get homeade breads, fresh juice, etc. That's what we've gotten at B&B's for half the price all over the country when we've traveled. I always thought that was the point of going to them?
The bed was comfortable, but we could hear the neighbors upstairs stamping around and murmured voices all night, so not very romantic at all. The other thing I disliked was looking out the windows and little patio at washlines, random yard junk from the neighbors, an RV over an old fence, and some dead plants that could have been clipped back or removed for the season. The house is not secluded at all nor is the Cabin. You have residential neighbors on both sides of you, so no privacy outdoors at all. Main house looks cute, but just not in an ideal location. Not scenic at all unless you drive for a bit.
Definitely not worth $200 per night. Oh, and there was no wireless internet either.

Anita --, the owner of this inn, is one of the most dishonest business owners I've ever dealt with. We were overcharged, taken advantage of, and verbal attacked. I will never stay at this Inn.

Anita Holley, Innkeeper at The Milton House Bed and Breakfast Inn, responded to this review

Milton House Inn Bed and Breakfast appreciates your taking the time to post a review. I understand your anger and I am sure it is more difficult because your reservation was not made in your presence.
You have writtten that you are Family with Children. As stated on our website and on every confirmation and verbally if taken by phone - we do not accept children. This is our home, we perform marriages, vow re-newals;guests become engaged and many guests come here for romantic getaways or just to be alone or grieve. It would be unfair to those guests who made reservations with this policy in mind (not accept children) to arrive to find children and babies.
The cancellation policy is also shared verbally, on our website and in every confirmation. To be of help- the cancellation policy is in place to allow those guests seeking accomodations the ability to reserve a room and also allows the hotel, inn or bed and breakfast to book the rooms for one night, usually more. Cancelling at the last minute is bad for both the guest and the business.
Your frustration and anger are real. Unfortunately, I, like all Innkeepers must enforce policies to be fair to every guest or potential guest.
