The Milton House Bed and Breakfast Inn is a real treasure nestled near Skyline Drive. The drive from DC is not difficult and, for me, has always been relaxing knowing what full well what's at the destination. The town of Stanley is your typical "small town" and a great retreat from the hustle and bustle of "jet-set DC." There are just enough restaurants and shops to keep you busy for a great getaway weekend. The movie theater always has current films. Church on Sunday? Whatever your flavor, you can find it.
The Inn from the outside looks like your typical B&B with a well manicured yard. The home has some historical significance in that it was originally purchased from the Sears catalog. I didn't know that Sears used to sell homes. The quality of the home is excellent; the same standard as the old Kenmore appliances, I suppose. That being said...what Anita and John, the innkeepers have done with the home is absolutely amazing. The interior is decorated absolutely beautiful. The decorative wallpaper, traditional furnishings, fireplaces, and chandeliers add to the elegance and charm of this wonderful home. The linens are high quality, the mattresses are extremely comfortable, and the pillows are "just right." You will not want to leave the bed...and you don't have to. The room was meticulously cleaned and linens carefully placed. I was particularly impressed with the book that Anita had put together for the room which contained information on some many activities of things to do in the area. I also loved the selection of coffee, tea, and hot cocoa in my room and special touch of a wine bottle opener and ice bucket. Anita and John had thought of everything.
Breakfast at the Inn was out of this world. You can fill up on breakfast and skip lunch. There was a lot of food. Anita cooks like a gourmet chef. I remember the first time I at there, I started with yogurt and granola and fruit. There were also pastries on the table. I thought that was it. No, there was more. There was a delicious western omelet with cheese, onions, and peppers and link maple sausage. My coffee cup was never empty. Did I say the food is excellent? Anita and John are also excellent conversationalists. They are extremely cordial and gracious hosts. I have been to this Inn several times over the last few years and have never been disappointed.
I absolutely love my visits to the Milton Inn. It is such a wonderful getaway from the DC rat race. I always leave feeling relaxed and refreshed. I have always stayed in the main house and once stayed in the room with the jacuzzi, which only added to the relaxation. Though I have children of my own, I am thankful for the "no kids" policy. It is the reason I chose to stay at the Milton Inn for the first time. It is a wonderfully relaxing home for adults. If you go there once, you'll be back again!
