There is always that last favorite & #1 B &B in your mind until???? A new discovery, a new love. Maybe the other one was just a crush after all because you like us may just fall in love again when Wendy fully embraces you into her home & if your are lucky & the timing is right her daughter & grandson.
We are CA. transplants. We have for various reasons been unable to get back to our roots in VA & NC together for over 10 yrs. Feeling a bit homesick & needing lots of family reconnects especially with huggs not just email & tele, we did it. We are older homebodies but then so is just about everyone else that we would be visiting. We are quite used to taking space & down time when we need it thus the primary rationale for choosing to stay in B & Bs on our vacation VS with family. Less stressful for family, less stressful for us. When I first found Rose Hill, I thought, I dunno, it might just be too old fashioned & feminine for us but especially so my husband who is very sports oriented.
So next I checked reviews & then took the time to read Wendy's website narratives, history, welcoming poem & non smoking dog even when on the front porch. ... That did it! It all clicked & we did not want to look anywhere else!!! We arrived after 2 other couples (who were already enjoying the front porch) but before the 4th. & last & everyone welcomed us. & everyone was introduced. We had the grand tour downstairs including the parlor with those fabulous & beautifully finished pocket doors. We scheduled our breakfast for 8:30a the next morning, given our keys & explanation for late p.m. egress, shown to our (Peacock Room) & our own private matching Peacock Bath just steps away down the hall. There is a small library type area upstairs as well with books, magazines & snacks. Off to have dinner with relatives approx. 5 min. away. We were the last ones in for the evening & Wendy had left a thermos of fresh cold water & glasses for us for the night.
The next morning I woke up on early (still on CA time I guess) grabbed the provided robe from our closet & tip toed downstairs to hunt up a cup of coffee. Wendy was already going strong & so was the coffee just like I like it. I knew she had things to do to ready for breakfast in the formal dining room so I hastened away to the front porch to enjoy my coffee & an allotted cig. Unfortunately here I made a mistake, because as I stepped out, I noticed the morning paper had been expertly tossed onto the porch & I bent over to pick it up & hear human feet & the click click of Loxey nails on hardwood and Wendy's voice saying oh, you don't have to do that, it is Loxey's job to bring in the newspaper ea. morning for me. So if you are first up, don't touch the paper & do remember to always make sure the front gate is closed so Loxey will be all safe & secure. Breakfast was excellent & beautifully served. ( Love those lil silver spoons) I am so disappointed that I missed tea. boo hoo. The huge park right across the street is a bonus too right in the heart of the historic district and has wonderful meandering old brick paths. Where is my lawn dress & parasol? I do hope I will be ready when my carriage comes. . Our short time at Rose Hill was just what we needed. We felt like Wendy included us like family & that not only had she a room for us but wanted us there & wanted us to feel special. We did. Thank you. L & D Noel
