“Needs TLC”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

These properties are in an excellent location, on top of a hill right close to town. We only saw the room we stayed in (a Harbour View Suite on the corner) so I am not sure about the other units. Apparently she has newer Villas and other Suites. The bathroom stunk like mold as the shower curtain was loaded with it. The screen door was literally falling off of the hinges. The door door had been repaired but was still falling apart with a metal piece that stuck out and may cut your hand if you are not careful when closing. A broken light bulb was left in the socket, not a huge deal but an eyesore and one less light. No beach towels in the room but we did get some when we asked. Jane, the owner, was very nice and accommodating but lacks some pride in her properties.

“Not for everyone but we LOVED it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

If you want a sanitized lodging experience, don't stay at Harbour View Villas. We shared the place with a stray cat, lizards, a few mosquitoes and an occasional chicken and we absolutely LOVED our time spent at this spectacular retreat. Our family of 4 was very comfortable in the 2 BR villa (separate single beds in the downstairs room for our teenage daughters and a queen upstairs for my wife and I). We prepared all our own breakfasts and lunches and one dinner and ate out the other dinners. This location is absolutely the best if you want an alternative to the small guesthouses in town and the resorts. 5 min. walk to a fabulous snorkeling beach in one direction (Carlos Rosario used to be the premier snorkeling spot, but we found Melones to be more colorful and rich with life last winter) and a 10 minute walk into town in the other direction. The views from the deck are spectacular and the stargazing is a real treat.

Yes, we did avail ourselves of the bug dope that was left in the villa when the skeeters came out in the evenings and yes, the kitchen featured appliances that looked like they were 30+ years old (everything worked fine) and yes, the housekeeping standards are definitely not what you expect at a Holiday Inn, but none of those things in any way diminished the experience for our crew.

Jane was a terrific hostess. She bought and mailed me our ferry boat tickets, picked us up at the ferry dock, took us grocery shopping and was helpful and accommodating in every way possible.

I would agree that the price is a bit steep, but it was worth every penny for us. If you have never been to Culebra, you are in for a real treat. It is unspoiled, incredibly beautiful, very low-key and just as relaxing a spot as I have ever visited. We're going back for our third trip in 5 weeks (twice have been connected to business trips). The first time was a day trip for my wife and I from Luquillo and the second was our 4 night stay at Harbour View Villas last February with the whole family. This year, it will be just my wife and I for (sadly) only 2 nights. I can't wait!

“Not recommended!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 April 2011

The good:
- Half-decent view
- Walking distance to town and to Melones beach
- There is mosquito netting provided around the bed
(you're in trouble in the rest of the unit though).

The bad:
- Very old – especially the kitchen appliances
- The BBQ is tiny! (Bolted on to the edge of the balcony)
- The units are not secure and can't be locked – (from the inside or the outside).
It has swinging wooden doors with a chain and pin!
- There are large spaces open to the elements where chickens, mosquitoes, vermin,
etc. can and do get in. The chickens and vermin make a mess inside.

The ugly:
- Our unit's kitchen was filthy - we were welcomed by rat feces and rat urine on the
kitchen worktop (and we learned that the previous occupants only checked out the day
before, and that the unit had been cleaned since).

Definitely overpriced!

“Fantastic View, Great Location, House is Rustic & a bit overpriced.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2011

Me & my partner arrived on the ferry from Fajardo. The owner, Jane, picked us up from the ferry and took us to a grocery store so we could pick up a few supplies. Jane also showed us around to the local restaurants, bars, ect...
After our small tour of the island, Jane took us to the house we would be staying at. The house was built in the 1980's by Jane's husband. It reminded me of a tree house. It had one bedroom on the main level and a loft bedroom upstairs. All the rooms had balcony's attached. The kitchen was fully equip with oven, stove, refrigerator, coffee pot, microwave, plates, pots/pans, and utensils.
The bedroom downstairs had 4 single beds. The bed upstairs in the loft was a twin with a mosquito net over it. We only used the upstairs bed and it was surprisingly comfortable with high thread count sheets.
I feel it is important to mention that none of the windows have screens. The mosquito are overwhelming. I brought bug repellent in anticipation of this problem. The bug repellent helped a little, but I left Culebra with no less than 30 itchy mosquito bites.
The bathroom in the villa had very nice fixtures. The shower did not have water pressure. The location of the villa is only minutes walking to the ferry and Melones Beach.
Before we left the island of Culebra we walked around, stopping at different guest houses and finding what people were charging. You can certainly find cheaper places to stay. That being said, there is a certain charm and privacy that come with Harbour View Villas. I would stay here again. I would try and get the price down from the 192 per night. I think that 150 would be a fair price.
