From December7 to 17th I enjoyed the hospitality and facilities of the Blau Cayo Coco. It was my fourth visit to the Blau, my 15th to Cuba. As in the past it was an excellent vacation. My room, #3231 tucked in behind the Dorado sea food restaurant was on the 2nd floor. The balcony overlooking part of the huge serpentine salt water pool that snakes its way through a good part of the complex the room was large with 2 ¾ beds, safe, bidet, tub/ shower, mini fridge stocked with pop a beer and a large bottle of water replenished daily. There was also an attractive bath robe (not to keep,) and slippers, a TV with multiple channels; and beach towels. A terrific house keeper kept my room spotless, lots of towels, shampoo, soap, etc. never a shortage, In my honest opinion and I am a fussy eater, the dining at the Blau was excellent. Breakfast. Everything. Fresh juice, eggs, bacon, omelets, crepes, sausages, cheese, cold cuts, bacon, fruit, French toast, still warm croissants and other pastries, yogurt, the list goes on. Lunch had changed somewhat. On previous visits you could enjoy a lunch, pizza, bar-b-qued burgers, chicken, ham and cheese sandwiches, french-fries, at the Yuraguano grill next to the salt water pool now that was changed they only offered burgers, fries and grilled cheese sandwiches, so lunch pretty much necessitated going to the buffet. which which did offer a huge selection of just about everything. .
As in the past dinner at the buffet was excellent , always a large choice, a nightly roast of pork, beef, turkey or what have you plus a grill where the cooks were providing customized service, fresh vegetables, hot soup, fresh breads, cold cuts cheese, you name it, also a large selection of desserts including banana flambé, pastries and ice cream. You would be hard pressed not to find something for every member of the family.
A la Cartes. I tried them all; the Dorado for sea food was very good, as was also the Italian. While I was there, the Caribbean restaurant which had been poolside until a fire last summer reopened in the ocean view restaurant behind block 15 although the view was somewhat lost since it didn’t open until after dark. I went the first night it opened, good food but slow kitchen; hopefully by now they have the bugs out and its functioning better.
Unfortunately there had been a few changes not entirely to my liking since my previous visit in April 2011.The snack bar at la placita (the plaza) where in the past you could get a nice sandwich 24/7 was only open during the night and the plaza bar was not opened at all. The churros stand in the plaza where they make those delicious Cuban donuts was also closed The beach bar which had been so nice for a beer and a burger overlooking the sea for lunch was also closed, although you could still get a beer on the beach since the bar had been moved to the beach activities building but no lunch.
In the past the fresh water pool near block 15 had been my favorite pool since it was a quieter area to hang out had closed during my visit last April for refurbishing and was still under construction during my visit. Possibly it is now open. Possibly also, since the resort wasn’t very busy when I visited, now the season is in full swing they may have made some changes. There is so much here to like, for myself I particularly enjoy the afternoon Spanish classes and the saltwater pool bar pool, a great place to play chess and harvest a tan at the same time. The piano bar which opens nightly at 7 is a wonderful attraction offering top notch professional entertainment, especially appealing to the more mature crowd, the beach is fantastic, no shortage of sun beds and the resort staff, no matter what their jobs are unfailingly helpful and courteous. The evening shows, wandering entertainer’s dancers and disco provide pretty much something for everyone. There are so many reasons the Blau has a loyal clientele returning year after year, I’m pleased to be one of them and will definitely be making a return visit
Room Tip: Pool side rooms maybe a little noisy during the day time.
