“Great Resort, Tryp Cayo Coco”

My husband and I booked our yearly vacation to Cuba this year, once again. We booked early in Sept. to go on Jan. 11, 2012-Jan. 18-2012.. decided to book VIP this year and were very glad we did so.
The extra you pay for the VIP package is very much worth it. We recieved separate check-in, a fabulous room, with 2 balcony doors, one in bedroom, one in livingroom, large bathroom, with jaccusi tub..and the fridge was filled daily with beers, soda, and water. The first day, we were welcomed to our room with a complimentary bottle of white rum.
The view from our room, which was room # 1468 was incredible. I would book that room again in a minute, to return to Tryp.
The buffet was good, always a variety of foods, and stations preparing hot foods to your liking. The breakfast was fabulous, making omelets and fried eggs in front of you , by order.
The other restaurants, which were automatically booked for us, when we purchased the VIP package,,, were great. The Italian and the chinese were my favorites. ! My husband loved the BBQ Grill... however, there is no washroom facility in this one, you have to go to the gym across the road.
The gym is a good size and has a sauna too.
The beach was amazing, always able to find a seat,,maybe not always in the same spot, but always able to find something. The water was rough for 3 of the 7 days we were there, but we still enjoyed it. The waves were amazing.
The quiet pool was our other favorite spot.. where Edgar at the pool bar made us our own special sour Edgar drinks.. not on menu... but ask and he might remember the ingredients, which my neice and I selected.
All in all, the resort staff was amazing.. always willing to help with anything and always happy and smiling. Of all the resorts in Cuba and Dominican Republic that we have been to,,, the staff at Tryp Cayo Coco were simply ... the best.!!!
Thanks for a wonderful vacation and an escape from winter.

Room Tip: Purchase the VIP package, its well worth the extra.!

“Excellent Holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

This was our second time at this hotel, the last time being in May 2011. At that time, a new manager had arrived called Alberto Jerez Ruiz Larrea. At that time, although we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday, we felt that the hotel needed sprucing up a little. We spoke to Alberto, and he told us of his plans. 8 months later, (Jan 20120) we returned and found that he was true to his word. Lots of improvements had been made with still further plans to do something about the lagoon under the hotel which can sometimes be a bit smelly. Also, it is scheduled for the rooms to be updated.
Alberto is a very nice person who is very approachable and likes nothing better than to mix with his guests. I have seen him on the beach before 7:00am checking things out, and then later he can be seen in the buffet checking out the quality of food and service. He is always around checking on one thing or another. The British are very well thought of in the Cayo's, as they think it is wonderful that we sit on an aeroplane for 10 hours to visit them. I would recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of visiting the Cayo's. I cant wait to go back again.

“The good, the bad and the ugly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

My husband, myself and two children (ages 6 and 6 months) went to Tryp Cayo Coco from January 15-22, 2012.

THE GOOD
- I had e-mailed the resort to request a ground floor room because we had a baby and Jorge made sure that was done. We had an early flight and got to th resort around 10:30am so out room wasn't ready but that was okay, our maid Alexi tried hard to get it done quickly for us when the people checked out.
-We enjoyed the food and were surprised so many people had warned us about the food in Cuba, we brought every condiment with us but only used the ketchup. The pizza place on the beach was great and the International restaurant was very good as well, the BBQ was really good but was typical bbq food, the oriental was pretty good also. I ate at the beach restaurant almost everyday for lunch and loved the chicken skewers with fries. The buffet had lots of grill stations that were very tasty.
-The grounds were beautiful and kept clean, our room was clean, the pool was nice, clean and child friendly but very cold.
-The daily entertainment seemed to ramp up around 3pm and it was geared towards the adults, apparently there was a childrens club but there were only posters it was never mentioned through the entertainment staff. There were two ping pong tables tables which kept people entertained all day.
-Staff were generally great and always appreciated anything we gave them
-We felt the store didn't overprice for necessity items or rum and the vendors didn't overprice their souvenier items so we didn't haggle at all.
-I broke my toe on the beach and the medical staff were great even though I had no idea what they were saying.
-Felt very safe on the resort and it was very lively, there was always music going (at a good volume) and we enjoyed that

THE BAD
-Although the food tasted good it did not agree with my husband and I, it is now a week later and we are still having stomach issues (we did not get upset stomachs until 5 days into the trip), so take Ducoral before you go or take a bottle of Pepto Bismol for daily use.
-The drinks were very inconsistent, never tasted the same twice.
-The rooms were dated but acceptable except for the bathroom, specifically the tub, it was old and dirty looking, I hated bathing my baby in it. We also had 2 cockroaches in our room throughout the week that we saw.
-The TV's were very old and the remote stopped working, they gave us a new one taped together with a band aid (gross!) and we had to keep re-programming it to make it work.
-No way to get any extra money, we walked to the next resort because they had a bank in hopes that they would give us money and the the only reason she did is because I had broken my toe and really needed it to pay my medical bills.

THE UGLY
-On the last day I wanted to exchange $5.00 cdn to have extra money at the airport, I was supposed to get $4.74 pesos back and the lady gave me $4.00. I walked away and thought that was too little, I went back to see the paper that you have to sign and I said you owe me $4.74 she says no you were in room 707 then she knew what I was talking about and huffed and gave me 4 more coins which was .40 pesos. I then corrected here again and she gave me a total of $4.70. Now to someone reading this it may seem petty but who knows how much or how many times people are getting ripped off on a daily basis and the fact that she was annoyed with me wasn't fair. Always check your money and compare it to the paper you sign....if you do the math they are cleaning up on a daily basis.

Generally it was a good trip, we are still undecided as to whether or not we would return to Cuba, we would not return to the Tryp for sure and we would not return to Cayo Coco because there is nothing there.

Room Tip: We were in room 707 which faced the large pool, we were very close to everything which was great for...

“Resort is not too bad,”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

We spent two weeks at the Tryp Jan 7th - 21st 2012. The best part about this hotel is its beach! Even though its their "winter" we swam in the ocean everyday and there was plenty of sun during the day.
When we first got into our room there was a damp musty smell but we kept our bathroom window open throughout our entire stay and the smell was only there that first day. During their winter even the locals speak of the high moisture levels so drying your clothes is difficult.
There are alot of different spots to eat but make sure to visit the pizza joint on the beach. Their pizza is better than ones here at home.
Make sure to bring a travel mug style drink holder due to the fact their cups are very small and you will find yourself refilling frequently.
The buffet had alot of variety with the exception of breakfast. Lunch and dinner I found the selection and choices alot more varied. The food at the buffet is ok. It's not great but that's because I think they don't cook enough with herbs and spices. Be sure to bring your own ketchup and peanut butter. Thier ketchup tastes like some form of HP type sauce not what we call ketchup. Their bread is fantastic. Make sure to book your a la cartes the day you arrive because they book up fast and you will be left with late dinner slots. My favorite was the BBQ and The Cuban restaurants.
The waiters, waitresses, bartenders and housekeepers make alot more in tips than the gardeners, shop keepers etc so be sure if you are going to tip to not forget those employees in the wings.
We did some deep sea fishing which I would highly recommend and the day tour into Ciego de Avilia where you stop for a quick speed boat ride on a lake, stop for an expensive Pina Colada, visit the cigar making shop, go to a cuban bar watch a band where they ask you to buy thier CD after, stop for lunch in Ciego in the hotel and quick 1/2hr to "shop" not too many shops or vendors, quick stop at the croc farm for a photo or two maybe a beer and then a quick train ride around the sugarcane field where soot from the train sprays all over you. Yes there was alot but not really of value in my opinion.
If you decide to do a tour into town and want to bring some stuff for the locals, we were asked for gum and pencils. I'm sure if you handed out anything it would be utilized. Remember they don't have big brand name stuff so anything from Aspirin to Mento's and remember what we can buy at dollarama for a buck is a big deal over there.
If you are a woman I would highly recommend you bring tampons regardless if you think you'll need them or not becasue in the hotel store they are 3x the price as home. What toiletries you dont use you can leave for your housekeeper.
If you go to the Tryp Cayo Coco and want to do alot of different things around the resort, well there really is nothing on the island to do other than visit different hotels but if you are looking for beautiful beach, sun, ocean and unlimited food and drink then this is the place. I found it to be very relaxing as that is what we were looking for.
There are about 85% french speaking tourists they can be quite loud and seem to have forgotten thier manners at customs.
They have a lagoon that encompasses the main area of the hotel that is absolutely disgusting. I don't get bothered by alot and it takes alot to gross me out and this made me want to vomit every time we walked by. There is NO way to avoid it. The hotel seems to be built over it and in order to get to anything you have to pass it.
Overall the resort is not too bad and for the price you really can't go wrong!
The main reason we would not go back is the smelly lagoon and the over whelming french speaking tourists because of thier lack of common courtesy. Please, thank you and your welcome are words understood in any language. :-)

Room Tip: Get a room with a bathroom window. Block 3 room 344 quite yet close to everything, clean, view of oc...

“EXCELLENT TIME!! CAN'T WAIT TO RETURN!!”

My family an I had a blast at the Tryp! The grounds are amazing, the food is very good and the staff are all kind and friendly! My 2 year old daughter loved the kids area and the kids shows! She also loved playing on the stage with the other kids!! The adult shows are amazing as well!! I was involved in one of them and was declared king!!! You can walk all over the grounds and find it all well groomed! The pools are great and the beach is beautiful!! The sand is so soft and white!! The only thing that need improvements are the rooms. Had a damp smell and it could use a updated renovation job. Brought a 200v-110v adapter. Needed it. Also a swamp smell from the water under the lobby but it wasn't that bad. Reminded me of Orlando Florida and Trinidad. Had a great time and can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the beach are quiet. Views are great from any room.
