“Fantasic hotel, excellent price, wonderful staff, perfect location!”

I went with my 2 year old daughter, my friend and her 11 month old daughter. When we arrived our room was small and we had no cot (as requested). This was not the hotels fault as they had only been told 3 people not 4 by the booking company (we paid the same price for the children as for us but this was still very reasonable and all 4 of us should've been on the booking). The hotel bent over backwards to sort us out with a cot and a bigger room. If you stay with a pushchair ask for a room with no stairs as most rooms have a flight of stairs once out of the lift. Another tip is to ask for a room with a terrace if you have a pushchair as this gives you more space in the room. We had a room at the back of the hotel with a terrace facing the mountains (we did still have a flight of stairs). The room on the photo with the terrace facing the beach is extra (but it's view is fantastic). The location is perfect for the beach and the old town and it is only a short walk to the newer busier town. The staff were wonderful and very friendly. The food was buffet style and very good. The pool was lovely and the views from the pool area were amazing. The rooms were spotless even if most of them are on the smaller size but we didn't spend much time in the room. The air conditioning is extra but it was complimentary to us for the inconvenience on the first night. Would go back to the Espanya hotel tomorrow without a doubt. A wonderful week.

“The Glory Days are sadly gone”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2009

Just returned from a week at the Espanya. It was a last minute job and what I knew about The Espanya led me to believe that I wasn't going to be lavished in luxury. It is 2star and the rooms say it all. Very Spartan , but very clean and reasonably decorated. The bathroom was large enough and everything worked. However if you wanted aircon they would transfer you to a room with this facility but at a cost of 15 euros a night, a bit much I would say. The location is brill, right on the beautiful beach area of Calella. The staff are brill, very pleasant, helpful and of good appearance. However the food is an issue.Plenty of it but the food was of poor quality. For the last 3 days of our stay we dined in Calella and found a real gem of a restaurant- The Luna Gaucha where you could have a 4 course meal , of excellent content and quality for Euros 9.5.There were a lot of photos on display which showed the Espanya when it was a classy hotel It was even one voted the tp hotel in the Costa Brava- this will never be the case again.

“The rooms were freezing!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 April 2009

Just got back yesterday and I have to say the hotel bar and reception were nice, but don't let that fool you, the rooms were small, cold and the fact that they have 1 plug per room (near the sink!!) was a bit useless. Good location tho. The view from my room was of other people's flats, and their underwear!!!!

Would not recommend the hotel, or the toen to be honest!!

“it is 2 star!”

the best thing i can say about the Hotel Espanya is it`s location, it is literally right on the beach, that`s a plus point! although seperating the hotel from the beach is the main railway line to Barcelona, you have to cross the tracks at crossing points to access the beach, but you get used to that and it`s not really a bother, the train station is about a quarter of a mile from the hotel and the train service to Barcelona is excellent! from the outside you can tell the hotel looks a bit dated, it`s nice when you enter the lobby, this area has obviously been recently re-furbished, so have the toilets, bar, dining area etc. another plus point was the staff, they where all really friendly & nice, especially the waiters & bar staff, now to the bad stuff about this hotel: it`s a mainly German dominated hotel, the German teenagers who stayed on our landing where a disgrace, as where most of the other German teens in the hotel at the time, loud music, drunk, shouting etc. however a lot of the German families who we met where really nice people, it`s just the teens who spoil it for the rest, the hotel rooms where a bit dirty & bit dated, it`s 2 star but really it`s 1 star, however the maids cleaned every day and left fresh towels, the breakfast was edible, some of it was actually nice, but if you like cereal, toast & coffee you`ll be o.k., the beer was o.k. too, 2.5€ a pint on draft, cocktails were about 4.5€, a litre of Sangria was 9.5€ and this was very nice, there is a pool on the roof but it was a bit smelly up there, smelt of a drains problem but was probably the astro-turf combining with years of dank water, i would`nt really recommend this hotel for couples or families unless you are on a really tight budget, if your a gang of teens looking for somewhere cheap & basic near the beach then this hotel will do, i would not check in here again myself but i would call in for a beer or 2.

“Nice holiday in August 2006”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2006

Really pleasant stay in hotel Espanya. Rooms are quite small for two adults and two children but conform to **+ hotel in my opinion. Staff is very polite and friendly and restaurant is - simply the best. I can recommend this hotel for family holiday.
