“Generally good, a bit noisy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2011

I stayed in this hotel on an Oak Hall Christian group holiday. The room was small for two strangers sharing, but was clean and adequate. The restaurant had an intersting variety of food, the only downside was that drinks were extra and not even water was available. Staff were friendly. The location is really handy for the beach and the train to BArcelona or further up the coast.

Our room was at the back of the hotel and there was quite a lot of noise (people shouting etc) outside at night. The windows are old single glazed patio doors, so aren't very soundproof. I complained about a bed being stored on the rear fire exit stairs. I didn't use the pool, but it was quite small and steeply shelving in depth. We used the downstairs room for meetings, and were interrupted by people using the toilets and entetrtainment in the bar overhead.

Room Tip: The lift doors take ages to shut, the trick is to press the floor you are on, then the floor you wan...

“Great Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

We had a basic room with no balcony but only paid £38.00 for the night. Room was cleaned every day. Hotel is opposite the beach and near to the train station. Internet available at a charge. 5 euro for six hours. Pool is on the roof with an adequate amount of sun loungers. You can take your own food and drink up there. Restaurant was good. We had breakfast and evening meal and was lots of choose from. Different theme each night - mexican, italian, oriental etc.

Room Tip: Front of hotel

“A sound budget hotel - bargain!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2011

We were not expecting much as we paid such a low price for full board at the Hotel Espanya, but we were very pleasantly surprised! The hotel has a real family-run feel, the staff are really pleasant and could not be more welcoming. The rooms were basic but very comfortable, clearly they have been updated in the last year or so, so they had a great power shower and aircon, tv etc. The food was good, I would say is that it wasn't particularly hot sometimes and there wasn't a great deal of choice if you are a vegetarian but plenty of choice with a great salad bar, fish and meat dishes and a 'special of the night' dish on offer.

The only negatives I would say about the hotel are if you have a beach view, it comes with the train line so you have to get used to the regular train running past every 30 mins between 6am and 11pm (not too bad after the first night, or bring your ear plugs just in case) - this isn't something that the hotel can change though, so just put in a request when you book to ensure you do not look out over the train line. Also, it seems they often welcome school parties, so if teenagers are not your favourite things in the world you need to bear this in mind (they didn't bother us but may have done if we had a room near them!).

All in all a great, budget getaway hotel. We would go back there without a doubt!

Room Tip: Get a non-beach view to avoid the train

“Fantasic hotel, excellent price, wonderful staff, perfect location!”

I went with my 2 year old daughter, my friend and her 11 month old daughter. When we arrived our room was small and we had no cot (as requested). This was not the hotels fault as they had only been told 3 people not 4 by the booking company (we paid the same price for the children as for us but this was still very reasonable and all 4 of us should've been on the booking). The hotel bent over backwards to sort us out with a cot and a bigger room. If you stay with a pushchair ask for a room with no stairs as most rooms have a flight of stairs once out of the lift. Another tip is to ask for a room with a terrace if you have a pushchair as this gives you more space in the room. We had a room at the back of the hotel with a terrace facing the mountains (we did still have a flight of stairs). The room on the photo with the terrace facing the beach is extra (but it's view is fantastic). The location is perfect for the beach and the old town and it is only a short walk to the newer busier town. The staff were wonderful and very friendly. The food was buffet style and very good. The pool was lovely and the views from the pool area were amazing. The rooms were spotless even if most of them are on the smaller size but we didn't spend much time in the room. The air conditioning is extra but it was complimentary to us for the inconvenience on the first night. Would go back to the Espanya hotel tomorrow without a doubt. A wonderful week.

“The Glory Days are sadly gone”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2009

Just returned from a week at the Espanya. It was a last minute job and what I knew about The Espanya led me to believe that I wasn't going to be lavished in luxury. It is 2star and the rooms say it all. Very Spartan , but very clean and reasonably decorated. The bathroom was large enough and everything worked. However if you wanted aircon they would transfer you to a room with this facility but at a cost of 15 euros a night, a bit much I would say. The location is brill, right on the beautiful beach area of Calella. The staff are brill, very pleasant, helpful and of good appearance. However the food is an issue.Plenty of it but the food was of poor quality. For the last 3 days of our stay we dined in Calella and found a real gem of a restaurant- The Luna Gaucha where you could have a 4 course meal , of excellent content and quality for Euros 9.5.There were a lot of photos on display which showed the Espanya when it was a classy hotel It was even one voted the tp hotel in the Costa Brava- this will never be the case again.
