“Lovely holiday - a truthful opinion”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2008

I have just come back from a lovely weeks holiday, staying at the Sol Balmoral Hotel. Whilst the hotel itself is quite dated and simple we had an excellent time and can not fault the cleanliness or etiquette of the staff.

The Sol Balmoral is only a 3* hotel so you cannot possibly expect to have 5* facilities. Yes there are no TV’s or other luxuries in the rooms but you are told of this upfront and if you are planning to go on a holiday where you can sit all week in your bedroom then book a different hotel!

The rooms were adequate for our stay – simple but clean. Not damp or dirty. The cleaning staff were excellent and changed our towels everyday, even though we sometimes didn’t need them changing. They served there purpose and we were happy.

The food and drink is fine. I guess if staying for two weeks or more then some of the meals can be quite repetitive but there is a very large selection of different foods. Always some kind of meat and fish cooked fresh and a variety of Spanish and English food (just in case you really need your pizza and chips intake!). Although I am not vegetarian I do prefer vegetarian options and I think there was plenty to choose from. LOTS of choice on the cold buffet (lots and lots of salads, cheese, etc) and there is always pasta with a tomato sauce and fresh veg in the hot buffet.

Meal times are what you expect for an all inclusive buffet. But I felt the dining hall was very comfortable, bright and sunny and the waiting staff worked hard to ensure tables were cleared and everything ran smoothly. We never had a problem of small children running around or making too much noise. I would suggest don’t go for your evening meal until 7-7:30pm onwards since a lot of the families choose to eat earlier.

The entertainment was fine as well. Plenty to do during the day including shooting, archery, football, water polo, French boules – and the entertainment staff work very hard to get people involved and having a good time. The night time entertainment was OK but again this is not a 5* hotel. There is a mini-disco for the children which was always fun, bingo and some kind of dance act. The two shows that the entertainment staff themselves perform (Fantasia – Disney classics, and Cabaret – Film classics) were excellent.

Callas de Mallorca is quite small and out of the way but there are two main beaches and a good variety of shops for all your souvenirs. We had a walk into the main town area most nights after dinner, which was lovely. I would definitely recommend hiring a car though if you can. This gives you a little more flexibility on things you can do and places you can visit.

All in all were very happy with our stay. For the money we paid for the holiday (less than £300 each all inclusive) we cannot complain. Everything was good, if we wanted ‘excellent’ then we would have paid double the amount to stay in a 5* hotel. If you’re just looking for a simple, enjoyable and relaxing holiday then I would most definitely recommend the Sol Balmoral. If you are uptight and like the finer things in life then stay away, it’s not for you!

“Miserable staff, below average food and dreadful entertainment”

The Sol Balmoral is in need of updating. However it is a clean hotel. The entertainment staff really try hard but the truth is their budget must be peanuts as the evening entertainment is a nightmare. We had to get out of the hotel even though we had paid for the all inclusive package. All drinks day and night are served in plastic glasses. The food is plentiful but not varied. If you're a vegetarian then be prepared to eat salads. There are two hotplates one cooking fish and the other meat. The food didn't seem to be cooked for long enough leaving the food raw on occasions. The worst thing is the staff. I have been lucky to travel all over the world. I can say without a doubt I have never met such miserable set of people in my entire life.

“GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 June 2008

Booked here for 2 weeks, all inclusive, through Freedom Direct. With one 3 year old in our party. This hotel and resort is excellent for couples & families but not recommended for the young clubbing types.

The Hotel is situated right on on the coast surrounded by the Mastines & Chahauhaus sister hotels. The Balmoral is the oldest of the 3 and is very dated in looks but is the best value for money.

Facilities :
Bar and restraurant were excellent. All drinks served in plastic glasses but with so many children about this is understandable. All local drinks were fine, including the wines. Food was also a reasonable standard and well prepared in front of you. Food does become repetitvie which would be a downside but plently of fresh salads, fruits and desserts. Fresh fish and meat was cooked in front of you each day.

Pools : 4 large and 4 small pools between the hotels we used the Balmoral apartments [pool which has a childrens play area next to the kids pool " killing two birds with one stone". This was always much quiter than the main pool at the Balmoral. Loads of sunbeds at the complex and never an issue getting one.

Activities : 2 Tennis courts, volleyball and a five a football pitch. Shooting, ten pin bowling and darts were played most days + keep fit class. Sports every day for adults and kids clubs for kids above 4 months old. Entertainers were excellent.

Evening Entertainment: Mini disco every night at 8.30 and usually bingo and a show thereafter , not bad but repetative. The entertainment crew were excellent and work very hard keeping veryone pleased.

Cleaning: Fresh towls every day and bedding changed 3 time in our 2 weeks. All aspects of cleaning at the hotel were excellent.

Rooms: Were very basic but clean. Ceiling fan in the room was good.

Beaches : Calas Antenna is a small beach directly oppsite the Balmoral and is very nice and takes less than 5 mins to get there. There are quite a lot of steps to get to it. The main Domingoes beaches are a 15 minute walk or you can get there on the road train for a euro. These beaches are europeon blue flag status again this year and are excellent. Water is shallow to about 250 yards out. Sun shades and Sun beds are 3.5 euros each for the day.

Shops: There is enough shops in resort (30) and about a 20 or so bars & restraunts including a burger King.

Staff: All spoke good english and were friendly and helpful

Dislikes: Stray cats roam about outside the front entrance and smell is bad in the heat. Hotel is basic but youget what you pay for and for youe 3 stars you do get good value.

I would recommend for a 7 day break for couples or families. Also suited for the elderly.

“glad to be back home”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2008

We arrived at the hotel just before 9pm on friday 16th May, checked in very quickly, and given card to room, which was on 7th floor with a lovely view.(this was the best thing about the place). We were there for two weeks, just got back today.
The room was very clean, and towels changed daily, which was good, only one plug socket in the room, and there was no dressing table area, the only mirror was in the bathroom. there are no televisions in the room, but they can be hired for 30 euros a week, thats robbery
First day at breakfast was like school dinners, very noisy, and kids dashing about all over the place, which is dangerous, however the breakfast was ok, cereal, eggs, bacon beans etc, also yogurts and croissants and jams, coffee or tea or juice.
Lunch and dinner were pretty much chaotic, it was not an enjoyable mealtime atmosphere, again children running here and there, shouting etc, this is not what you expect in a dining room, it got very tedious at times, and the choice of food was almost the same each day.
The evening entertainment wasn`t up to much a short while with the kids on stage called the mini-disco, but the stage and seating area were just full of parents drinking their alcohol whilst their children ran riot around the place, no wonder all drinks were served in plastic see through cups, it was awful, the noise was worse than a school playground, you could not relax in that place at all, and always check your seat before sitting, its probably wet from some spilt drink
The pool area is ok, that is when you dont slip on spilt drinks, and stand on empty plastic drink cups.
The resort of calas de mallorca is very small, with a few shops all selling the same stuff, a few little bars and cafes, quite expen sive though, we thought. There is a lovely cliff walk to the beach, however, this is a good 25 minute walk, there is a beach that is nearer, but it has a very steep climb down to it, of 124 steps, so not for the un-fit or elderly, but a lovely beach nevertheless.
Whilst we were there the weather was not very good, there were a few thunderstorms and lots of heavy rain, and there was absolutely nothing to do in the hotel, nothing was done to entertain the children, which would have stopped them from running around like lunatics, after all they do need some entertainment
we did not have any problem with our room, we were on the top floor, but some people we got to know had to change rooms because of swarms of ants, and damp beds, (they were not the only ones) these were lower ground rooms
This is the only holiday that we have wished away the days.
There is no etiquette at this hotel, and certainly no rules as to what children can or can`t do. Its just a free for all.
I would say this is more like 2 star than 3 star
Glad to be back home.

“Got what I paid for.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2008

My biggest mistake was booking this as a cheap getaway during the (british) summer holidays. Looked quite a nice area when we arrived but a bit remote, hotel reception was ok and fairly swift though they'd confused a twin room with a double room which took an hour to sort out (I was on holiday with my child) Hotel itself was very busy and was reminiscent of an inner city council estate - loads of kids running around whilst their track suited parents sat outside drinking (lots of brand new, white reebok classics around ha ha). Rooms basic but clean with just one plug and a TV you had to pay for . A couple of pools, the large one full of floating lilos - and I mean FULL, small one better. All the sunbeds by the pool covered with towels first thing and generally left there (unoccupied) all day, can't blame the Germans on that one! Food was good though try and find a quiet time to eat as it's not always easy to find a table plus don't even think about getting there as it's opening, we tried it once and it was like a scene from dawn of the dead with people scrambling all over each other to get to the buffet. Free drinks bland and lager served in tiny plastic cups (2 drinks at a time maximum) so lots and lots of queing. Staff friendly though looked bored. To sum up the hotel, if you've ever seen the programme 'Benidorm' ,well imagine a hotel full of Janice's family families and you've got Sol Balmoral. Area itself is a small purpose built tourist resort and beach is a twenty minute walk away plus 10 euros if you want to use a lounger when you get there. As i said, we went during the school holidays, it may be better at other times but don't hold your breath.
