I have just come back from a lovely weeks holiday, staying at the Sol Balmoral Hotel. Whilst the hotel itself is quite dated and simple we had an excellent time and can not fault the cleanliness or etiquette of the staff.
The Sol Balmoral is only a 3* hotel so you cannot possibly expect to have 5* facilities. Yes there are no TV’s or other luxuries in the rooms but you are told of this upfront and if you are planning to go on a holiday where you can sit all week in your bedroom then book a different hotel!
The rooms were adequate for our stay – simple but clean. Not damp or dirty. The cleaning staff were excellent and changed our towels everyday, even though we sometimes didn’t need them changing. They served there purpose and we were happy.
The food and drink is fine. I guess if staying for two weeks or more then some of the meals can be quite repetitive but there is a very large selection of different foods. Always some kind of meat and fish cooked fresh and a variety of Spanish and English food (just in case you really need your pizza and chips intake!). Although I am not vegetarian I do prefer vegetarian options and I think there was plenty to choose from. LOTS of choice on the cold buffet (lots and lots of salads, cheese, etc) and there is always pasta with a tomato sauce and fresh veg in the hot buffet.
Meal times are what you expect for an all inclusive buffet. But I felt the dining hall was very comfortable, bright and sunny and the waiting staff worked hard to ensure tables were cleared and everything ran smoothly. We never had a problem of small children running around or making too much noise. I would suggest don’t go for your evening meal until 7-7:30pm onwards since a lot of the families choose to eat earlier.
The entertainment was fine as well. Plenty to do during the day including shooting, archery, football, water polo, French boules – and the entertainment staff work very hard to get people involved and having a good time. The night time entertainment was OK but again this is not a 5* hotel. There is a mini-disco for the children which was always fun, bingo and some kind of dance act. The two shows that the entertainment staff themselves perform (Fantasia – Disney classics, and Cabaret – Film classics) were excellent.
Callas de Mallorca is quite small and out of the way but there are two main beaches and a good variety of shops for all your souvenirs. We had a walk into the main town area most nights after dinner, which was lovely. I would definitely recommend hiring a car though if you can. This gives you a little more flexibility on things you can do and places you can visit.
All in all were very happy with our stay. For the money we paid for the holiday (less than £300 each all inclusive) we cannot complain. Everything was good, if we wanted ‘excellent’ then we would have paid double the amount to stay in a 5* hotel. If you’re just looking for a simple, enjoyable and relaxing holiday then I would most definitely recommend the Sol Balmoral. If you are uptight and like the finer things in life then stay away, it’s not for you!
