As two couples travelling between Madrid and Valencia, we had decided that we should spend at least one night in a Parador. It would be our first time, and hopefully be a highlight of our trip, we thought. Things started well enough when we entered the impressive reception hall, although the service was formal and restrained, rather than friendly and welcoming. Our rooms were dull and old fashioned, and there was an unpleasant odour the corridor leading to them. The Parador's so-called lounge looked as though it was rarely used, and again, that unpleasant odour. A more airless, depressing room would have been difficult to imagine. Reception staff told us that the smell was carpet adhesive, which was slow in setting because of the hot weather. We didn't go near the lounge again.
We retreated to the outside pool and gardens, which are unremarkable, and later, the high point of the visit, a very good salad lunch taken in the conservatory. After that, I'm afraid it was downhill all the way.
That evening, we had dinner in the conservatory. After placing our orders, we had a considerable delay before our drinks arrived, but the problems really started when the main course of veal and fries arrived. The veal looked nothing like what we had expected, indeed, it was a kind of sirloin steak, and as for the fries, if they'd been served in a greasy spoon cafe, we'd still have sent them back. When the replacement fries arrived, it was obvious they were from the same batch as the originals, merely refried to make them appear crisper. Much of the the meat was proving largely inedible. At this point, one of us went to reception and requested to speak to the manager to express our dissatisfaction. On his return, both the maitre d' and the manager appeared at our table to continue the discussion. Whilst they offered us alternatives, we expressed our general disappointment with the whole Parador experience. All this was done in front of the other diners, which was uncomfortable for them - and us. In the event, one of us got a satisfactory alternative meal, whilst those who didn't request them were not charged for the originals. The following day during checkout, both couples were awarded a 15% discount voucher for a future night's stay at any Parador.
All in all, this was a most disappointing experience. The staff in general appeared to display a superior attitude, almost giving guests the impression they were lucky to be staying there. The exceptions were the two young waiters in the conservatory, who appeared to be overworked and under pressure, but who, to their credit, remained cheerful and polite throughout.
Judging by previous reviews going back as far as the Scottish one in 2004, this Parador needs a root and branch review to bring it into the 21st century. I very much hope this was not representative of all Paradors in Spain, otherwise this will have been our one and only visit to them. Thankfully, when we reached the Vincci Lys Hotel in Valencia, we were greeted by cheerful, helpful staff who made us feel welcome as soon as we stepped through the door.
