My boyfriend and I stayed in the Hotel Alvar Fanez for two nights in late April and both of us really enjoyed our stay. We had made a last minute decision to come to Ubeda on a tour of Andalusia and are very glad we did. We had a bit of trouble finding accommodation at first because it was siesta time and everywhere was full or closed, but Alvar fanez seemed to be the exception.
At 93 euros for a double room Alvar Fanez was the most expensive hotel we stayed in on our trip, but was very much in line with the average in ubeda and was over 20 euros cheaper than some other hotels nearby. The staff on reception were very friendly and helpful and when asked for dinner recommendations made no effort to push the hotel's own restaurant.
We stayed in room 203, which seemed a lot bigger than many of the other rooms in the hotel. We had a small en-suite bathroom, which was clean and well furnished, and the main room was divided into two parts: one containing two generous single beds and the other being a sitting room of sorts with a TV, armchairs and table. We really enjoyed having the extra space after spending the previous few nights in youth hostels, but would have felt less happy paying a similar amount for the smaller rooms.
Breakfast is offered on the 2nd floor in a sunny room running along one side of the building. It is a buffet breakfast with a generous selection of yoghurts, cold meats, and fruit on offer. There is a grill to make your own tostadas and by the time we'd finished we were pretty full! It's definitely a spanish style breakfast though: no bacon and eggs here as the breakfast room is largely unstaffed.
As for the clientele, in our mid twenties we were by far the youngest guests and Ubeda as a whole tends to attract more mature couples. We didn't hear any English spoken by the other guests but all the reception staff spoke it well.
While it's true that there is no parking available onsite, this is hardly surprising, located as the hotel is in the centre of a medieval walled city. There is a large public car park around five minutes walk away and we found this completely adequate.
All in all, this hotel is a friendly, peaceful base from which to explore a fascinating and compact city and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a friendly welcome in a central location.
