We were very disappointed with this hotel which is advertised as a 4* hotel. A 2* rating would have been more like it! First of all there is no parking at or near the hotel. We had to park some 5 minutes walk away and then try to find someone who could give us directions on how to get to the hotel. We were given room 102 which was a generous sized room but the bathroom was extremely small - the bath was badly cracked, tiles were loose on the floor and the tiles around the sink had not been cleaned. The bar and the restaurant were both closed for refurbishment, which we had not been warned about at the time we made our booking (only two weeks previously). Overall the hotel has a very "tired" feel to it and we would not recommend it.

I have stayed here a couple of times, and while not being the fanciest or plushest hotel in Ubeda, the Alvar Fanez is a nice choice. The location is very good for exploring the historic district. The restaurant can be excellent for dinner. The place is a bit understaffed, but the service that is there is good. The rooms are nice and spacious, some with balconies. No major complaints. They allow small dogs, too.

This was a very charming hotel of the type that are popping up all over Spain. I guess you could call it "totally refurbished to look like it is old"... but in a good way, because the decor is all very well-selected in both the rooms and the lovely inner patio. On the second floor there is a cute terrace overlooking some of the rooftops in the charming old town, and upon your arrival a member of the staff takes you to the roof to see the spectacular view from there (though unfortunately you can't return after that unless you ask for a key). The young man who greeted us upon arrival said he was fascinated by his own city's history and explained all of the historical buildings in sight from the roof to us.

The room was spotless, both sleeping area and bathroom, and done quite tastefully in a way that made it seem antique, but without having any wear and tear. We also had a chance to eat in the basement restaurant. That may sound bad, but you don't feel like you are in a basement because it is quite elegant, despite which the prices were extremely reasonable.

I must also say that the breakfast was unbeatable! They had all of the highest quality meats (yummy spanish ham). Everything was fresh. They even had the full setup for making the Andalusian tomato and olive oil toast, and all in this beautiful old dining room. Great work, hotel owners! I really can't think of a negative thing to say (ah, that it didn't have parking, which shouldn't be difficult in such a small town!)
